Job Description

About the Role Looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Stargazing Guide to lead evening astronomy tours in Kapalua. This is a contract-based, per-tour position for someone interested in sharing the night sky with visitors through thoughtful, science-oriented tours. Training and equipment are provided. Responsibilities Arrive one hour before each tour to set up telescope equipment and prepare the site. Lead engaging and informative stargazing sessions for guests. Safely operate and handle telescope gear. Monitor weather conditions and make on-site decisions about cancellations or partial tours. Communicate professionally with guests and booking partners when tours are cancelled or rescheduled (will be trained on use of the booking system). Ensure all equipment is properly packed up and stored after each tour.
Note:
A full setup and cancellation procedure will be taught during training. Requirements Must live in West Maui (non-negotiable; you will not be considered otherwise) to monitor local weather conditions. Must have free evenings (no evening obligations). Tour times vary depending on sunset. Must have a truck or SUV capable of transporting tour equipment. Must be physically capable of moving approximately 100 lbs of equipment on a dolly up and down stairs and across sand. Basic understanding of astronomy concepts (training provided). Experience in hospitality or tourism and comfortable engaging with visitors from around the world. Reliable, punctual, and professional in communication. Attention to detail, comfort with technology (telescope electronics and booking systems), and ability to stay calm under changing conditions. Additional Information Tours run for 1 hour, starting between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM depending on the season. Training on telescope operation and tour procedures is provided. Tours are scheduled based on bookings and weather; candidates should be comfortable with variable evening work. This is ideal as supplemental or flexible evening work. Compensation & Details $100 per completed tour. $50 for tours cancelled due to weather. $75 per training tour. Tours are dependent on bookings; consistent weekly work is not guaranteed.
