Job Description
Position Title:
Museum Interpreter Position Summary:
The Museum Interpreter serves as an ambassador for the WWPL museum, providing an engaging and educational experience for visitors. While the museum is primarily self-guided, the Interpreter leads guided tours of the historic birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, offering historical context and storytelling to enhance the visitor experience. In addition to leading tours, Interpreters serve as the museum's primary greeter, welcoming visitors and answering questions about exhibits and the Wilson home, while also conducting regular safety rounds throughout the museum to monitor guest welfare, protect collection items, and remain available to assist visitors with inquiries. This position requires strong communication skills, enthusiasm for history, and the ability to adapt to different audiences.Key Responsibilities:
- Lead engaging and informative guided tours of the historic birthplace home of Woodrow Wilson, tailored to a diverse range of visitors, including general audiences, school groups, group tours and large bus groups.
- Provide accurate historical information, answer visitor questions, and facilitate discussions to enhance understanding and appreciation of the site.
- Assist with visitor services, including greeting guests, providing directions, and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.
- Support self-guided visitors by offering supplemental information and resources as needed.
- Assist with educational and public programs, special events, and temporary exhibitions as required.
- Monitor visitor behavior to ensure the preservation and security.
- Maintain knowledge of the WWPL's mission and stay informed about new research or interpretive techniques.
Qualifications:
- A strong interest in history, education, museum studies, or a related field.
- Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
- Previous experience in museum interpretation, education, or public engagement is preferred.
- Ability to manage large groups.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and navigate historic buildings and grounds that may have limited accessibility.
Work Schedule & Compensation:
- Part-time position; weekends and some evenings required
- Hourly wage $12.
