Position Summary Located in the Town of La Pointe on Mooningwanekaaning "Madeline Island" the spiritual home of the Anishinaabeg, the Madeline Island Museum (MIM) is one of twelve museums and historic sites that are part of the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS). The Visitor Services Specialist (VSS) is a dynamic position within Museum Operations that will entail work in front desk admissions, museum tours, special events, and the retail gift shop. The operational phases of work will also include helping staff prepare for the season, ensuring positive daily guest experiences, and other job duties as assigned. . The VSS will help foster a healthy organizational culture as part of the (MIM) staff, inspire teamwork and collaboration, and build effective relationships across the agency.
Visitor Services Tasks:
Greet visitors to the museum; collect admission fees; answer questions about the museum and its programs; orient visitors to the museum; operates audio-visual orientation programs; answers phone inquiries about museum; provides information on Madeline Island services and points of interest; and may conduct visitor surveys. The VSS also sells merchandise through the museum store. The VSS may take reservations for, sell and collect tickets to, and assist with preparations for programs and special events; and assist in setting up the museum and galleries prior to opening for the season and closing the museum at the conclusion of the season.
Interpretive Programming Tasks:
Under supervision of the Director and with guidance and training from the Curator or Lead Interpreter, the VSS conducts informal tours of (MIM) exhibits and presents interpretive information to the public on the history of the Apostle Islands and the Chequamegon Bay area. Salary Information Pay is $19.50 per hour with a weekend differential of 80 cents per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 18-00. Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire. Job Details A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job. This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 20 hours per week. Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions. Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status. WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States. Qualifications Experience or an active interest in working with the public and dissemination of public information Individual must have an interest in learning the history of the Madeline Island Historical Museum and Chequamegon Bay area. Excellent customer service and communication skills Experience in cashiering, retail, and customer service Ability to function and cooperate in a team environment Ability to legally operate a state-owned motor vehicle in the state of Wisconsin.
