Job Description

The County of Greenville needs a seasoned Benefits Specialist to serve our 2600-strong workforce. Are you looking for a boring job where things are the same from one day to the next? Where there is no challenge? Where you will have no chance to learn new things? "that's how we've always done it" is repeated like a mantra? Well, if so, look somewhere else. Here's what the job looks like from day to day: Employees ask a lot of questions. Benefits are sometimes confusing, so we address their questions efficiently and with true empathy. And we get the answer. You'll make sure new hires are enrolled in benefits. Employees need to make a change? You'll congratulate them on their wedding or the birth of their child, and you'll help them get enrolled. The insurance companies we work with are great partners. You'll work closely with them to resolve employees' issues, and you'll make sure they get paid. They'll love you for that. You'll tell people "No" from time to time, but you'll work diligently to see if we can find a reasonable solution first. You'll check your work. That means pulling reports and figuring out if everything is correct in the system on occasion. These audits mean we find mistakes and correct them before they create a problem. When the latter part of the year arrives, you'll be part of the team that manages our open enrollment. We need your insight and input because these decisions are important. We have three people on our team, so you will learn how each of these work together. Sometimes people take vacations and you'll need to back them up, and they'll return the favor later. If you think something can be done better, faster, more economically, or in a more caring way, you'll be expected to speak up. On difficult days you will always remember that it isn't just a co-worker you are serving, it is all of the 570,000+ citizens of our County. What does it take to succeed as a Benefits Specialist? A servant attitude. Any degree in a field relevant to the benefits field (that's a wide-open range) OR...direct experience (2+ years) in HR and/or benefits. Ability to juggle. Not like bowling balls and stuff, but important priorities. If you're an organized person, you'll do well. Analytical thinking is great, and we like it. But you also need to balance that with empathy. Both are required. Most everyone can use MS Office, but you will find that your success tracks closely with your abilities in anything tech related. An orientation toward finding solutions, executing on plans and concise communication. Attention to detail. (An appreciation for subtle humor is also nice.) Great written and oral communication skills. High integrity. People sometimes over with someone they trust, and you'll be right in the thick of it. But you can never, ever, ever breach confidentiality. Not just because it is illegal, but because it violates our Values. Must have a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
