Job Description
Human Resources Assistant Full-Time or Part-Time Start Your Human Resources Career While Supporting a Meaningful Mission The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an organized, detail-oriented, and people-focused Human Resources Assistant to support the daily work of our Human Resources team. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in building a career in Human Resources while gaining hands-on experience in recruiting, onboarding, employee support, training, and HR administration. Whether you are a recent graduate, currently pursuing education in Human Resources or Business, or have experience in reception, customer service, office administration, or administrative support, this position provides an opportunity to learn and grow within a mission-driven organization dedicated to helping animals and the people who care for them. What Makes the ARL Different At the ARL, our work is rooted in compassion, collaboration, and service. As Iowa's largest nonprofit animal welfare organization, every role contributes to improving the lives of animals and strengthening the communities we serve. Our Human Resources team supports employees across a wide variety of departments, helping ensure staff have the resources, training, and support they need to succeed. As a Human Resources Assistant, you will play an important role in creating a positive employee experience while developing valuable professional skills that can serve as a foundation for future growth within the HR profession. What You'll Do The Human Resources Assistant provides administrative and operational support for a variety of Human Resources functions. In this role, you will assist with recruiting activities by posting open positions, scheduling interviews, communicating with candidates, and supporting hiring events and outreach efforts. You will help coordinate new employee onboarding and orientation activities, prepare employment paperwork, maintain employee records, and ensure information is entered accurately into HR systems. You will also assist with training coordination, recordkeeping, and special projects that support employee engagement and organizational effectiveness. The position requires a high level of organization, attention to detail, and professionalism, as you will regularly work with confidential employee information. You will also serve as a helpful resource for applicants, employees, and managers by providing administrative support and directing questions to the appropriate HR team members. What You Bring This position is ideal for someone beginning a career in Human Resources or looking to transition from an administrative, customer service, reception, or office support role into HR. A high school diploma or GED is required. Additional education or coursework in Human Resources, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field is strongly preferred but not required. The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential for success in this role. Most importantly, we are looking for someone with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in supporting employees and organizational success. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions This position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer-based work, occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds, and the ability to work in an environment where animals and allergens such as pet dander, dust, and airborne particles may be present. Why Join Our Team If you are looking for an opportunity to gain practical Human Resources experience, develop professionally, receive mentorship, and contribute to meaningful work that impacts both animals and people, we encourage you to apply. This position offers exposure to multiple areas of Human Resources and provides a strong foundation for future career growth. Employment in this position is at-will, meaning that either the employee or the ARL may terminate the employment relationship at any time. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and applicable state regulations, the Animal Rescue League provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and encourages applicants to discuss potential accommodations.
