Staff Birth Assistant•Freestanding Birth Center Minnesota Birth Center Minneapolis, MN Job Details Full-time $21 an hour 1 hour ago Qualifications Labor & delivery NRP Certification Interpersonal skills BLS Certification Out-of-hospital birth experience Birth center Full Job Description The Birth Assistant will be an integral member of the clinical team within our midwife-led, freestanding birth center. This role requires competence in anticipating the needs of both the midwife and the patient/family, as well as a deep dedication to providing compassionate, patient-centered care and proactively supporting the work of others.
Supervision:
The birth assistant (BA) reports to the Nurse Manager for all conduct, duties, and responsibilities. The BA functions at each birth under the direct supervision of the attending CNM. The BA is also accountable to the Midwifery, Administrative, and Medical Directors.

Committed to the philosophy of physiologic and out-of-hospital birth. Demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively. Ability to remain calm and effective in urgent or high stress situations. Displays flexibility in adapting to the evolving healthcare environment. Aligned with MBC's mission, goals, and values. Prior experience in birth work a plus.
Leadership knowledge/ skills/ abilities:
Ability to effectively manage company resources. Skilled in modeling company values through daily interactions within the organization, particularly with regards to health and safety. Capable of supporting the work of the organization. High standard of ethics, discipline, and professionalism. Fosters the growth of students and new employees, contributes to positive workplace culture, builds inclusive workplace teams. Proficient use of EHR; ability to learn AMD charting system.
Schedule:
Generally scheduled for 24-hour call shifts. Monday•Thursday call shifts 1st

7:00 AM•7:00 AM (24-hour call) Full-time schedule consists of 6 24-hour call shifts per two-week pay period.
Additional schedule requirements:
Works every other weekend 2-3 holidays annually, assigned by rotation. May take call from home but must remain within 30 minutes of either birth center during call hours. May be required to work designated daytime core hours on site. May be required to travel between birth center locations during a shift. Mileage to, from and between work sites is not reimbursed unless otherwise specified by policy. Clinical and administrative duties and responsibilities: Orientation and training requirements: Expected to complete training alongside other BAs, CAs, CCs, RNs, and CNMs through supervised, on-the-job learning at births and in clinic. Expected to complete any additional education, training, or certification (beyond that provided by MBC) that is necessary to safely and competently perform the BA role independently. Review and demonstrate understanding of MBC's policies and procedures manual prior to completion of orientation. Must complete Birth Assistant Orientation within three months of hire and Education checklist within nine months of hire.
Responsibilities when on-call for births:
Maintain availability and phone accessibility during scheduled call shifts. The BA is responsible for making sure the CNMs and MBC have updated contact information. BAs are called to birth center at the discretion of the on-call team. May support clients in early labor at the birth center under the direction of the CNM. Provides emotional and physical labor support to client and family. Assists with comfort measures and positioning. Prepares clinical equipment and supplies for labor and birth. Assists the CNM during birth and immediate postpartum care, including supporting newborn transition as directed. Consults with CNM regarding appropriate timing for calling in additional support staff prior to birth. Once the CNM or RN has determined the patient meets criteria for discharge, the BA may provide discharge education as directed by licensed staff. Completes terminal cleaning and restocking of birth room, to be done before birth assistant leaves the birth center .
Administrative duties:
Cover open shifts for CA and CC positions, when available. May be assigned tasks supporting the CC and CA teams. Complete data entry into national perinatal database. Assist with receiving and stocking medical supplies or other delegated tasks from Med Supply Coordinator. Perform weekly checklist tasks for clinic assistant. Attend scheduled meetings as specified in policy and/or requested by manager. Complete accurate charting and clinical documentation within 24 hours of patient encounter. Scope of practice and role limitations: All clinical tasks must be performed only under the supervision and delegation of a licensed provider. The unlicensed BA may not independently assess, diagnose, treat or make clinical decisions regarding patient care. The unlicensed BA will not administer medications, start or manage IV therapy, or conduct home visits. A licensed personnel (RN, CNM, CPM) must remain in-house until patients are discharged or deemed ready for discharge. Any task that exceeds the BA's training, competence or scope must be immediately deferred to a licensed staff member. Physical requirements Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to walk up and down stairs repeatedly. Must be able to work long or overnight shifts as required by call schedule.
