Job Description
GENERAL DEFINITION
Performs responsible supervisory, technical, protective, and human support service work ensuring the care and security of inmates in the field of the county, does related work as required. The work can involve an element of personal danger.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Lieutenant or designee and is responsible for supervising subordinate inmates.TYPICAL TASKS
Enforces all Workforce and County Work Program Rules and Regulations; Monitors inmates participating in the Workforce and County Work Programs; Evaluates work performance and behavior of County Work Program Manage vehicle upkeep and maintenance of department issued vehicle that includes scheduling of preventive maintenance, inspections, cleanliness and servicing. Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or other superior ranking officers. Transport work crews throughout the county for trash removal to include observing inmates while performing assigned tasks, observing traffic while observing work crews alongside county highways ensuring safety.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint; general knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution to which assigned; some knowledge of the basic principles of human psychology; ability to ensure institutional rules are adhered to by work crew; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to supervise the activities of small groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to utilize office software and email.TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education or experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented with courses in first aid and preferred some experience in the law enforcement and/or custody work.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RELATED OBLIGATIONS
Ensure adherence to institutional security protocols, chain of command, and privacy requirements (e.g.,inmate information handling). Background check and drug screening as required by department policy. The successful applicant will possess and maintain a valid Virginia Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Applicant must have and maintain a driving record acceptable to Franklin County and its insurance carrier(s).PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to spend a considerable amount of time in working with inmates both in the field as well as at the Franklin County Jail.WORK ENVIRONMENT
