Job Description

Mercy Wellness is a licensed medicinal and adult-use cannabis company engaged in all aspects of the cannabis industry, from growing and cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and retail. We employ approximately 80 employees and are actively expanding our legacy relationships to continue offering the lowest prices to our customers. Position Overview:
The HR Generalist is responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating Human Resources functions for Mercy Wellness. This role works collaboratively with leadership, department heads, managers, and employees to ensure HR operations are professional, compliant, accurate, and aligned with company needs.
Responsibilities include:
Lead day-to-day Human Resources administration for Mercy Wellness, including employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, compliance, payroll, employee records, and HR systems. Lead the execution of payroll processing for Mercy Wellness, including bi-weekly payroll, timekeeping review, payroll adjustments, employee status changes, bonus and incentive pay, vacation and sick pay, expense reimbursements, benefits changes, and coordination with finance, leadership, and payroll providers to ensure payroll is accurate, timely, and compliant. Work collaboratively with staff leaders to implement and maintain Human Resources policies, procedures, and best practices across the organization. Act as a key HR liaison for Directors, Managers, and employees, providing guidance and support related to HR policies, employee relations, benefits, payroll, leaves of absence, workers' compensation, compliance, and general HR processes. Recruit, interview, and facilitate the hiring of qualified applicants for open positions; collaborate with department managers to understand staffing needs, required skills, role expectations, and position competencies. Coordinate background checks, employee eligibility verifications, onboarding documentation, and new hire requirements. Implement and maintain new hire orientation processes, onboarding workflows, and employee recognition programs. Maintain accurate employee records and ensure data integrity within HR information systems, payroll systems, personnel files, and related employee documentation. Oversee employee disciplinary processes, ensuring progressive discipline is properly documented, communicated, and maintained in employee files. Conduct or support investigations related to employee conduct, policy violations, workplace concerns, and other employee relations matters as required. Guide managers through the progressive discipline process, providing coaching, documentation support, and counseling as appropriate. Support departments in the creation and management of performance improvement plans for under-performing employees. Liaise with leadership to ensure all positions are appropriately staffed and that the hiring, onboarding, and offboarding processes are executed accurately, professionally, and efficiently. Support and help administer HR processes, including annual performance appraisals, compensation/increase cycles, annual goal setting, employee events, wellness initiatives, employee engagement programs, and required compliance notices. Serve as a liaison for employees regarding benefits, compensation, leave of absence, workers' compensation, payroll questions, employee status changes, and related HR matters. Assist in the communication, interpretation, upkeep, and continuous improvement of the employee handbook, employee directory, organizational chart, policies, procedures, and internal HR communications. Ensure all Mercy Wellness employees remain compliant with mandatory training requirements, certifications, licensing, acknowledgments, and company-required education. Maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, including wage and hour requirements, leave laws, workplace safety, employee documentation, personnel records, required postings, and HR best practices. Support cannabis industry compliance and regulatory requirements as they relate to employees, workplace standards, required documentation, employee badges or licensing where applicable, mandatory training, and internal compliance processes. Coordinate with leadership and compliance teams to ensure employee-related regulatory requirements are tracked, completed, documented, and maintained. Assist with workplace safety, injury reporting, workers' compensation documentation, required training follow-up, and OSHA-related HR recordkeeping where applicable. Provide project management for Human Resources initiatives, employee engagement programming, company events, compliance projects, policy updates, and other internal initiatives as assigned. May assist with employee terminations, exit interviews, final documentation, offboarding workflows, and related employee separation processes. Support general office administration for the main office, including maintaining office supplies, coordinating supply orders, keeping shared office areas organized, supporting basic administrative needs, and ensuring the office environment remains stocked, professional, and functional. Perform other HR, compliance, administrative, and operational duties as assigned. Skills/Competencies Strong analytical, problem-solving and conceptual skills. Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to show a high level of service responsiveness to internal customers and effective partnership with colleagues, as well as the ability to determine when situations require escalation or may be handled independently. Ability to effectively work within multi-disciplined work teams to respond to business needs. Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive human resources issues with confidentiality and discretion. Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required. Must have demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Must have a proven, consistent track record showing the ability to work with all levels within an organization. Must display a high level of energy and self-motivation. Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with HRIS systems and Google suite products
Education/Experience:
Associate's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field, or significant work experience in lieu thereof Minimum of 5 years of progressive Human Resources experience Strong knowledge of employee relations and recruitment/onboarding administration and practices, human resources systems, policies and procedures and human resources generalist activities SHRM, PHR, or SPHR designation preferred. Corporate experience in a multi-unit environment preferred Knowledge of employment legislation for California preferred Must be 21+ years of age and pass a criminal background check Working Conditions and Physical Demands Regular work requires usage of a computer for extended periods of time, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day. Able to travel between our four locations throughout the work week due to business needs. This is a salaried, exempt position requiring at least a 5 day work week. Must be available to support nights and weekends as required due to business needs The wage range for this position is $70,000- $90,000, Annually, commensurate with experience.
