University of California, Santa Cruz - Associate Vice Chancellor - Human Resources Human Resources Job Description An R-1 research university and a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities, the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) is an inspired, global, public research university that is internationally recognized for its research and scholarship, its undergraduate and graduate teaching, and its deep commitment to public service. Staff Human Resources (SHR) supports the campus by propelling the university mission, engaging and developing people, empowering campus partners, building trust and teamwork, and providing excellent Human Resource services. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Finance, Operations and Administration, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Staff Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer (AVC-SHR/CHRO) is a strategic leader who provides advice and guidance to executive management in all human resource-related areas. The
AVC-SHR/CHRO
exercises independent judgment and decision-making authority on highly complex matters and provides strategic planning, policy formulation, and program development relating to human resource functions. The
AVC-SHR/CHRO
will guide the development of a talent management strategy that enhances UCSC's competitive advantage as an employer of choice, with HR policies and practices that attract, develop, and retain a highly talented workforce, champion diversity and equity, and foster a safe, inclusive workplace culture. The
AVC-SHR/CHRO
leads a dedicated team of 65+ people responsible for talent acquisition, benefits administration, compensation and classification, time and attendance/ payroll, human resources business systems administration, employee and labor relations, policy, training, and professional development. In some areas of responsibility, such as labor relations, health, welfare, and retirement benefits administration, SHR oversees the process for both academic and non-academic employees. A member of the system-wide Human Resources Leadership Council, the
AVC-SHR/CHRO
also works with other campus units to provide complex personnel policy interpretation, labor contract administration and interpretation, and effective employee relations, among other things. With an undergraduate degree ideally complemented by a Master's degree or certificate in a relevant field (or an equivalent combination of experience and training), the
AVC-SHR/CHRO
will have human resources leader­ship experience in a complex matrixed, unionized organization. Motivated by the university's mission and vision, the
AVC-SHR/CHRO
will ensure that SHR consults, serves, provides expert advice, and works collaboratively and responsively with campus and systemwide constituents. Applying impeccable judgment and unquestionable integrity, the

Special conditions of employment include:
