Full Job Description Animal Shelter Manager Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to direct and manage animal shelter, and animal control for St.Bernard Parish Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Oversees and manages daily operations at shelter: Responsible for all animals housed at shelter including determination of adoptability, transport candidate, breed specific rescue candidate, euthanasia determination, animal location and end of stray and quarantine hold; entering and processing procedures in Petpoint Date System such as in-takes, return-to-owner, owner surrender, transferring transports and medical history; administering vaccinations and heart worm testing when needed; managing Trap Neuter and Release program of feral cats and communicating with those individuals that participate and assist in TNR; trained and licensed Euthanasia Technician; final determination on euthanasia decisions; records and maintains controlled substance log; arranges and plans Rabies Drives; contacting and arranging veterinarian services; hurricane evacuation and preparedness Oversees and manages Animal Control for parish: Performs Animal Control Officer duties including after hour calls, bite cases, hospital visits to obtain bite case info, statements and pictures; issues citations, site rechecks, enforces ordinances, prepares case history and notices of hearing for Bureau of Administrative Adjudication, aids in prosecution; instructs and monitors ACO's performance, disciplines when needed, reviews ACO's field reports; communicates, informs and enforces ordinances with public while on field calls and in office via phone calls and in person; orders seizure of animals when necessary; determines outcome of bite cases and aggressive animals; determines neglect and abuse, and prescribes necessary action to be taken; enforces animal control ordinances; receives victim and suspect statements and records them into data system for case files Oversees adoptions: Screens adopters for appropriate placement of animals; arranges and hosts off-site adoptions on weekends with adoption partners such as PetCO and PetSmart and major adoption events such as Tour for Life, etc. Seeks and arranges transports to other shelters and rescue groups: Communicates and arranges transports to shelters in other parishes and states, drives transports of animals after hours and occasionally overnight Maintains shelter and surgery supply ordering and inventory: Meets with sales representatives and arranges shelter pricing for shelter supplies; maintains shelter supply and surgery inventory and places purchase orders for necessary supplies to support shelter operations and the feeding of shelter animals Operates within budget limitations: Reviews initial yearly budget, requesting any additional funds for budget lines if needed; operates shelter within budget limitations for all ordering of necessary shelter supplies, surgical, medical, and daily operations, for veterinarian cost for spay/neuter, medical attention as needed for shelter animals, veterinary cost for spay/neuter services for public animals, and for employee salaries; researches and participates in grant writingAdditional Functions:
Performs other related duties as required.Minimum Qualifications:
Associates Degree in Animal Science or a related field required; Supplemented by three years of experience in animal welfare; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Certification /License :
