Job Description

Are you passionate about cats? Would you like to make a difference in a shelter animals' life? Bay Area Pet Adoptions is currently hiring for a part-time animal care technician to work in our Cattery. We are looking for someone who loves cats, is dedicated, hard-working and wants to help keep our shelter cats and kittens happy, healthy and socialized. This is not a "sit around and play with kittens all day" position but it's a perk! Experience working with cats, or experience in a veterinarian's office or an animal shelter is highly preferred. If you are interested, please read carefully. Only applicants with current resumes will be considered. References will be verified. The shelter is staffed 7 days a week. Availability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays is required. This position includes but is not limited to: Keeping the cattery building clean and tidy, including but not limited to the free-roam cattery, cat kennels, sink area, cattery isolation room, bathroom and hallway. You will be cleaning and disinfecting the kennel building, washing and folding laundry, proper feeding, lots of socializing the cats and kittens, providing enrichment, medicating and/or monitoring sick and injured animals, providing quality care for all our shelter animals, in addition to assisting with adoption counseling and communicating with the public, including cattery volunteers. Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, injury, disease or discontent and report any changes to leadership immediately. Cross-training for other positions may apply. You must be comfortable working with all ages and temperaments of cats and kittens, including some who may be a bit spicy.
REQUIREMENTS A
valid driver's license is required. Must have reliable, daily transportation. Must be reliable and show up to work, ready to work. Tardiness is not acceptable. Must be available to work weekdays, holidays and weekends. Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. Have organizational skills Possess strong communication skills. You must have the ability to communicate with staff members, leadership, volunteers and the public. Ability to be productive, efficient, and respectful during high stress periods. Willingness to learn and ability to retain information taught. Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling individual animal temperament. Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment. You must treat all animals with respect and kindness. Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written direction. Be Pro-Active!
PHYSICAL EFFORT
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, communicate, and listen, frequently working in a bent position. Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach or carry with hands and arms. Frequently on your feet for most of the day. Use strength or agility in capturing and restraining more active or spicy animals. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, including but not limited to large bags of food and kitty litter.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds and temperaments; exposure to unpleasant odors and loud noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases.
