Job Description

Enrichment and Training Assistant 2.4 2.4 out of 5 stars Position Summary Nassau Humane Society improves the lives of homeless animals in our community by providing them shelter and compassionate care. Our work focuses on adoption services, education about responsible pet ownership, and working to reduce animal overpopulation and homeless pets. We are seeking two energetic, team focused individuals for a part-time and full-time role as Enrichment and Training Assistants. This role requires confident handling of a wide variety of dog breeds and reports directly to the Enrichment and Training Manager. The ideal candidate should be in good physical condition, and comfortable working in various weather conditions. Patience, conscientiousness, and a composed demeanor are key attributes. Basic knowledge of reward based training, operant conditioning, and the purpose of canine enrichment is advantageous. In addition to these responsibilities, the part-time Enrichment and Training Assistant plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive and compassionate atmosphere for all stakeholders, including guests, staff, volunteers, and animals. Upholding exemplary customer service standards is essential in promoting a welcoming environment and ensuring the well-being of both animals and humans alike. Position Responsibilities
  • Enact training and enrichment programs grounded in LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) principles, ASPCA approved training methods, including supervising structured playgroups, teaching leash manners, facilitating humane muzzle acclimation, and guiding the appropriate, welfare-focused use of training equipment under the supervision of the Enrichment and Training Manager
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to organize and provide daily enrichment activities for shelter dogs and group dog walking.
  • Monitor and assess dogs' stress levels, dispositions, and temperaments to identify potential issues, and report findings to the Enrichment and Training Manager.
  • Regularly update the Enrichment and Training Manager on the dogs' behavioral progress.
  • Ensure enrichment areas and materials are maintained and cleaned.
  • Help and support the Animal Care team and Medical team with simple tasks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Enrichment and Training Manager or Shelter Director. Core Skills

  • Ability to excel in an unstructured environment and both initiate and execute the creation of protocols, processes, procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to interact positively with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Ability to balance working independently with seeking thought partnership and guidance.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees in performing varied tasks.
  • Teamwork and genuine enjoyment of collaborative work is required.
  • Ability to work under pressure to prioritize and manage workload and manage simultaneous tasks within a fast-paced and changing environment. Qualifications
