Tanque Verde Riding Club is a small, welcoming and professional western riding facility dedicated to cultivating horsemanship, confidence, and a love for riding in students of all ages. Our program focuses on respectful horse training practices and rider development in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Horse Trainer & Barn Assistant to join our team. This position combines hands-on horse work—training, restarting, and support during western riding instruction—with essential barn operations to ensure horse health and facility upkeep. The ideal candidate is hardworking, safety-minded, and genuinely enjoys working with both horses and people.
Key Responsibilities:
Train and restart horses using humane and consistent methods Assist with breaking horses Support western riding instruction for both youth and adults Handle daily barn maintenance including: Refilling slow feeders and grain bins Monitoring and supporting horse wellness Administering fly spray, grooming, and blanketing/fly mask care as needed Maintain clean and organized barn and tack areas Work collaboratively with other staff and communicate clearly with clients Provide excellent customer service to students, parents, and visitors
Required Qualifications:
Experience in horse training, including restarting and groundwork Working knowledge of western riding techniques Ability to lift and move 3-string hay bales (up to 100 lbs) regularly Comfortable working around children and adults in a lesson environment Positive, team-oriented attitude with excellent communication skills Dependability, punctuality, and professionalism
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting or leading riding instruction First Aid/CPR certification Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

$16.00 - $20.00 per hour Application Question(s): Have you worked with horses to train them at various points of development (starting, restarting, tune ups, etc)? Please describe your experience with horse health, wellness, and daily care, including feeding routines, turnout, grooming, and identifying signs of illness or injury. Since we work outdoors the work hours will be dependent on weather... For example... Summer hours are early in the day and/or late in the afternoon. Are you OK with a schedule that will be dependent based on the seasons here in Tucson and may require multiple trips to the barn in the same day? Please describe your experience teaching horsemanship to adults and children.
