Job Description

The Assistant Barn Manager supports the Barn Manager in the daily operations of the barn and assists with the supervision and scheduling of stable hands. This position helps ensure proper care and maintenance of horses and barn facilities while following established procedures and safety protocols. The Assistant Barn Manager serves as a secondary point of contact for boarders regarding routine animal care or facility-related matters, escalating concerns to the Barn Manager as needed. Responsibilities include assisting with monitoring horse health, reporting signs of illness or injury to the Barn Manager, and providing basic care and treatments as directed. The role also involves supporting inventory management, staff coordination, and preparation for programs, lessons, and events.

H.S. diploma or equivalent

Valid LA Driver's License Years Relevant Work Experience:
2 years experience in horse care, barn operations, or a related field
Preferred :
5 or more years related experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of equine care, including feeding, grooming, and exercise routines
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Proven experience in horse care and barn management
  • Ability to recognize signs of horse illness or injury and report promptly to the Barn Manager
  • Ability to operate and maintain barn-related tools and equipment
  • Ability to assist in assessing animal health, feed quality, bedding, and housing conditions
  • Strong organizational skills to support daily barn operations
  • Ability to learn and follow BREC policies, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays for programs/events
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, patrons, and the general public
Essential Functions and Duties:
  • Assist the Barn Manager in overseeing daily barn operations
  • Support feeding schedules and maintain inventory of feed and supplies
  • Help coordinate staff tasks related to feeding, grooming, exercising, and cleaning stalls
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed for staff, volunteers, and animals
  • Assist with cleaning stalls, removing manure and bedding, and disinfecting feed and water troughs
  • Help prepare and maintain areas for shows, lessons, and riding activities
  • Assist with preparing barns and stalls for boarders and BREC horses
  • Monitor horse health daily and report concerns to the Barn Manager
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed by the Barn Manager or veterinarian
  • Maintain accurate records of horse care, feeding, and health in coordination with the
Barn Manager Secondary Job Duties:
  • Assist with clients regarding boarding needs
  • Help coordinate facility repairs with maintenance staff
  • Perform administrative tasks such as record keeping for barn supplies
  • Assist Barn Manager in coordination of events, clinics, or competitions hosted at the barn
  • Assist in preparing horses for sale and transportation as directed
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed for staff, volunteers, and animals
