The supervisor is also responsible for performing a full range of Dog Care duties, including assisting in the care, maintenance, and enrichment activities in the Canine Development Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises team members to provide quality care of dogs and completion of daily responsibilities. Plans and oversees daily activities to ensure proper customer service. Supervises individual and team effectiveness. Leads employees using a performance development process including goal setting, feedback, and performance management. Coordinates with Manager of Canine Care to provide volunteer opportunities. Supervises and trains volunteer groups; oversees and ensures proper guidance of team members' volunteer groups. Maintains the supply and ordering of all dog equipment inventory for all of operations. Develops and maintains schedule for all Dog Care team members and volunteers. Develops and implements kennel enrichment and socialization activities for dogs to reduce kennel stress. Responsible for feeding, running and medicating dogs while ensuring a safe and humane kennel environment. Assists with evaluation of dogs entering the kennel to ensure that they are adequate for training. Provides training as to proper work procedures related to kennel and training assistance duties. Recruits, mentors, develops and successfully manages a team to achieve the strategic objectives and the present and future needs of the department. Collaborates with the volunteer engagement department to identify the need for volunteers as well as interviewing, training, and providing on-going supervision and feedback, support and recognition of volunteers working within the department. Leads team members using a performance support process including goal setting, feedback, and development. Evaluates career change dogs and supports placement. Responsible for maintenance of training and evaluation records, dog inventory and other data entry as assigned. Assists with canine health care and routine procedures as needed. Cleans and maintains kennel bay areas. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred, high school diploma or equivalent required. Two years of supervisory experience required. Two years' previous work experience in general customer service, cleaning, maintenance and animal care-related areas required. Previous experience in a kennel environment and basic dog training experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have the ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines; must have the ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Must have strong customer service and interpersonal skills; must have the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with all employees, volunteers and external customers. Must be comfortable and willing to work with large dogs in a kennel, on leash, and in variety of environments. Must have the ability to interact with blind and visually impaired clients with courtesy and professionalism. Must possess rapport with animals and ability to maintain humane treatment and care of dogs. Must be proficient in latest version of Microsoft Office products. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills, and have acuity with detail. Must be able to work shifts as assigned including weekend and holidays. This position requires adherence to all applicable safety and health policies and procedures. Must possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties. Must possess a valid driver's license with no restrictions and the ability to travel as needed. Must be willing to perform general public relations duties on behalf of Leader Dog (perform tours, answer general questions, be a professional and courteous representative of Leader Dog, etc.). Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions with employees that promote positive teamwork, as well as with volunteers, donors, clients and all constituents of Leader Dog. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
