Nesconset, NY About Paws of War Paws of War is a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, training, and pairing animals with Veterans, First Responders, and Active Military Members. Our work is driven by a commitment to both animal welfare and supporting those who have served. Position Overview Paws of War is seeking a reliable and experienced Part-Time Kennel Manager to oversee daily kennel operations. This role is essential in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the dogs in our care while maintaining a clean and organized facility. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of canine behavior and be confident in reading body language, preventing issues, and supporting a calm, structured environment. This position requires availability on Thursdays and Fridays , with flexibility to assist outside of those days on an as-needed, on-call basis . Key Responsibilities Oversee daily care of all dogs in the kennel, including feeding, watering, and monitoring overall health Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized kennel environment (cleaning runs, laundry, disinfecting surfaces, etc.) Observe and assess dog behavior, recognizing signs of stress, anxiety, or reactivity, and respond appropriately Implement safe handling techniques and help prevent conflicts between dogs Support basic behavior management by reinforcing structure, routine, and positive habits Monitor dog behavior and report any health or behavioral concerns to the appropriate team members Assist with intake and discharge of dogs as needed Support trainers and staff with handling dogs for training sessions when needed Maintain accurate records of feeding schedules, medications, and general care Ensure all kennel protocols and safety procedures are followed Qualifications Prior experience working in a kennel, shelter, veterinary office, or similar environment preferred Strong understanding of canine behavior, body language, and safe handling practices Experience working with dogs of varying temperaments, including high-energy or anxious dogs Ability to work independently and take initiative Must be reliable and able to maintain consistent coverage on required days Willingness to be flexible and available on an on-call basis as needed Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment Physically capable of lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and handling dogs of all sizes What We Offer Opportunity to be part of a mission-driven organization Hands-on experience working with a variety of dogs, including service dog candidates Supportive team environment How to Apply Please submit your resume and a brief description of your experience to sagea@pawsofwar.org .
