May 27, 2026 Position Summary The Cosmetology Teacher Technical Assistant provides instructional support, classroom assistance, clinic preparation, sanitation support, student organization, and program operations assistance under the direction and daily supervision of a properly licensed cosmetology instructor. This position is designed to support the cosmetology teacher and students in maintaining a safe, organized, professional, and state-compliant learning environment. The Technical Assistant does not serve as the instructor of record, does not supervise the school of cosmetology, and does not replace the licensed cosmetology instructor required under Michigan law. Purpose of the Position The purpose of this position is to assist the licensed cosmetology instructor with the day-to-day operation of the cosmetology classroom, student salon/clinic, equipment setup, sanitation systems, student tracking support, and general program organization. This role helps ensure that students are prepared, supplies are available, sanitation expectations are followed, and the learning environment reflects professional salon standards. Reports To The Cosmetology Teacher Technical Assistant reports directly to the licensed cosmetology instructor, CTE administrator, building administrator, or other designated district supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Cosmetology Teacher Technical Assistant may assist with the following duties under the direction of the licensed cosmetology instructor:
  • Assist with classroom and clinic setup before, during, and after instruction.
  • Prepare student workstations, mannequin areas, shampoo areas, nail stations, esthetics areas, and clinic spaces for daily use.
  • Help organize student supplies, kits, towels, capes, linens, products, and equipment.
  • Assist with distributing and collecting classroom materials, assignments, forms, and student documentation.
  • Support students with locating supplies, organizing materials, and following classroom procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, safe, and professional cosmetology learning environment.
  • Help students follow sanitation procedures as directed by the licensed instructor.
  • Restock sanitation supplies, disinfectants, gloves, towels, capes, paper products, and other program materials.
  • Assist with laundry, towel preparation, station cleanup, and end-of-day sanitation routines.
  • Help maintain sanitation logs, cleaning checklists, inventory lists, and classroom organization systems.
  • Report unsafe conditions, broken equipment, missing supplies, or sanitation concerns to the licensed instructor.
  • Provide non-instructional support to students during classroom and clinic activities.
  • Assist students with organization of kits, binders, assignment folders, practical logs, and required documentation.
  • Help students prepare for practical activities by ensuring they have needed materials and supplies.
  • Assist with attendance tracking, practical hour documentation, service logs, and assignment collection as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with inventory, supply ordering preparation, product organization, and storage room maintenance.
  • Help maintain student files, practical records, service records, and clinic forms.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling, client intake forms, clinic service organization, and front desk support.
  • Help prepare materials for state board practice, classroom projects, advisory meetings, parent events, student showcases, and program activities.
  • Support program events, career exploration activities, field trip preparation, and student salon operations as assigned. Duties Not Permitted To remain compliant with Michigan cosmetology law and licensing expectations, the Cosmetology Teacher Technical Assistant shall not:
  • Serve as the licensed cosmetology instructor.
  • Supervise the school of cosmetology.
  • Replace the daily supervision required by a licensed instructor.
  • Count toward the required student-to-instructor ratio.
  • Teach cosmetology theory or practical services independently.
  • Evaluate student practical skills for licensure purposes unless directed and verified by the licensed instructor.
  • Perform regulated cosmetology services on students, clients, or the public unless separately licensed and authorized within the scope of that license.
  • Sign off on state-required hours, practical services, clinic competencies, or licensure documentation unless permitted by law and district policy.
  • Make final decisions regarding student competency, licensure readiness, or program compliance. Required Qualifications
  • Valid Cosmetology License & Cosmetology Instructors License
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work under the direction of a licensed cosmetology instructor.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records and program information.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with students, staff, parents, and visitors.
  • Ability to support a clean, safe, and professional classroom/clinic environment.
  • Willingness to learn and follow cosmetology program procedures, sanitation expectations, and district policies. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a salon, school, CTE, beauty industry, or classroom support setting.
  • Current or previous cosmetology-related license, such as cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, or natural hair culturist.
  • Knowledge of sanitation, infection control, salon safety, and professional beauty industry standards.
  • Experience working with high school students.
  • Experience with inventory, scheduling, student records, or clinic operations.
Compliance Statement This position is a support position and does not authorize the employee to act as a licensed cosmetology instructor unless the employee independently holds the appropriate Michigan instructor license. Under MCL 339.1206, a cosmetology instructor license requires, among other qualifications, a cosmetology license, instructor training, examination approval, and at least 3 years of practical experience, with at least 1 year in a cosmetology establishment. A limited instructor license may be issued to an individual who meets the instructor requirements except for the 3-year practical experience requirement; however, the holder of a limited instructor license shall not supervise a school of cosmetology at any time. Therefore, the Cosmetology Teacher Technical Assistant works only under the supervision of the licensed cosmetology instructor and may not replace the instructor, supervise the school, or perform duties outside the scope allowed by Michigan law, district policy, or the employee's individual license status. Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
