Job Description

Certified Crematory Operator Lake Zurich, IL 60047 From $20 an hour - Full-time From $20 an hour - Full-time Responsible for the safe, respectful, and compliant operation of cremation equipment and processes. Ensures regulatory adherence, accurate recordkeeping, chain-of-custody integrity, and compassionate interaction with families and funeral-home staff. Key responsibilities Operate and maintain cremation equipment (retort, emissions controls, loading/unloading systems) according to manufacturer guidelines and facility protocols. Prepare remains for cremation, verify identification, complete required authorizations, and maintain strict chain-of-custody and positive identification procedures. Handle and process cremated remains with dignity; prepare, label, and package remains for release or interment. Maintain accurate, auditable records and logs for each cremation, including reporting required to regulatory agencies. Maintain facility cleanliness, hazardous-material handling, and infection-control procedures. Interact professionally with families, funeral directors, and staff; provide compassionate service and clear information when appropriate. Required certification & licensing Current certified crematory operator credential (state-mandated license or recognized credential such as NFDA Crematory Operator Certificate), valid in the facility's jurisdiction, before start date or within employer-defined probationary period. Any state-required funeral service or crematory permits/licensure maintained in good standing. Valid driver's license if transportation duties are required. Required experience & skills If you have experience it is a bonus, but do not need any prior experience as long as you are certified. Strong understanding of cremation equipment operation, combustion principles, and emissions control. Detail-oriented with excellent recordkeeping skills and ability to follow legal/ethical protocols. Mechanical aptitude for routine maintenance and troubleshooting. Compassionate, professional communication with bereaved families and multi-disciplinary teams. Ability to work independently, manage time, and respond calmly in emotionally sensitive situations. Education High school diploma or GED required. Technical training in funeral service, mortuary science, or equipment operation preferred. Physical requirements & working conditions Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physical tasks (bending, standing, climbing) for extended periods. Exposure to heat, chemicals, odors, and biohazardous materials; strict compliance with PPE and safety protocols required.
