Job Description

Job Summary Surgical Veterinarian Assistant is the position responsible for assisting the Veterinarian during surgery and monitoring animals during recovery. This person should have advanced experience and knowledge of being a Veterinarian Assistant or working in a hospital setting. They will need to have excellent communication, organizational and multi-tasking skills. This position will need to be able to lift at least 100 lbs assisted. Responsibilities Pre-operative tasks such as animal restraint and owner education. Pre-operative tasks such as anesthesia monitoring, patient positioning, and sterile instrument handling. Post-operative care including medication administration, surgical note taking using medical terminology and monitoring recovery progress. Handle animals with care using proper animal husbandry techniques, including animal IV catheterization, restraint, and understanding of animal physiology and psychology. Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, patient histories, laboratory tests, and imaging results such as X-ray reports. Support laboratory work by collecting samples, preparing specimens, and assisting with diagnostic tests as needed. Ensure cleanliness and sterilization of surgical tools and work areas following strict aseptic protocols. Assist with pet grooming, kennel cleaning, dog training, or pet care activities to promote overall animal well-being. Requirements Previous kennel experience or hands-on animal handling experience preferred. Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and veterinary critical care practices. Experience with laboratory procedures or X-ray operation is advantageous. Familiarity with pet grooming, dog training, or pet care techniques is a plus. Strong understanding of animal restraint methods and aseptic techniques to prevent infection. Ability to work effectively in a team environment while maintaining attention to detail under pressure. Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in critical situations. Excellent communication skills for collaborating with veterinary staff and educating pet owners on post-surgical care. Physical ability to be on feet for the majority of the work day and lift 50 lbs unsupported, 100 lbs with supported. Pay:
$13.00 - $20.00 per hour
