Non-Exempt Join Our Lifesaving Team The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) is seeking a skilled and compassionate Shelter Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant to support the medical care of animals in our shelter. This role is ideal for a veterinary professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is confident in clinical skills, and is passionate about serving vulnerable animals and the community. What You'll Do As a key member of our veterinary team, you will: Administer medications and treatments to shelter and foster animals Assist veterinarians with exams, case updates, and treatment plans Perform injectable anesthesia protocols, intubation, anesthetic monitoring, and patient recovery (based on experience level) Perform digital radiography and assist with diagnostics Obtain and process laboratory samples (blood, urine, fecal, swabs, etc.) Conduct daily shelter walk-throughs to monitor health concerns Triage medical emergencies when the veterinarian is not immediately available Assist with humane euthanasia procedures as required Maintain accurate medical documentation and controlled log books Ensure treatment areas, pharmacy, and medical equipment are clean and fully stocked Communicate clearly with fosters, volunteers, and team members regarding medical care Assist other departments as needed to support overall shelter operations Other duties as assigned This position requires strong clinical judgment, independent work, and the ability to pivot quickly in a dynamic environment. What We're Looking For Minimum Qualifications Minimum two years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant or Technician High school diploma or equivalent Demonstrated clinical knowledge and technical skills relevant to shelter medicine Proficiency in proper animal restraint. Experience with client communication and education. Basic understanding or the ability to learn veterinary software programs. Typing, computer and general office work experience. Experienced or educated in laboratory procedures such as proper blood and specimen handling Venipuncture Excellence in nursing care Preferred Qualifications Experience in emergency or urgent care settings Previous shelter medicine experience Credentialing as a certified veterinary technician Key Skills & Attributes Strong technical and nursing care abilities Excellent communication and customer service skills Ability to work independently with sound clinical judgment Reliable, dependable, and adaptable in changing situations Commitment to humane and ethical animal care practices Ability to collaborate effectively across teams Working Conditions Fast-paced animal shelter environment Exposure to zoonotic diseases, fractious animals, loud noise, chemicals, and sharp objects Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Extended standing, bending, stooping, and animal restraint required Holiday and weekend work required Because of the integral nature of this role, team members are expected to provide at least two hours' notice prior to calling out whenever possible. Benefits Include:
Medical insurance beginning on the first of the month following your start date. Paid Time Off (PTO), including Paid Sick Time, accruing at 4.61 hours per pay period. Approved PTO usage may begin after 60 days of employment. Eleven (11) paid holidays per year. 8 hours of paid birthday leave per year. HSSA 401
(k) plan beginning the first of the month following your start date. Employer matching contributions after one year of employment, provided you are at least 21 years old and have worked 1,000 hours during that year. HSSA currently matches employee contributions dollar-for-dollar up to 3%. Access to supplemental insurance through AFLAC, beginning the first of the month after your start date if you elect this benefit.
