Part-time / Variable Hourly About the Role House of Guineas is seeking a dedicated and highly responsible individual to provide specialized in-home care for exotic animals. This is a high-level caregiving role requiring an individual who can maintain a calm, professional demeanor during medical emergencies and act as a primary advocate for the animals in our care.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Specialized Pet Care:
Provide attentive care for small mammals (guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters), reptiles, and birds.
Dietary Management:
Manage species-specific nutrition and fresh water. This may include handling and providing live or safely stored insects and small mammals for reptile clients as required.
Medical Administration:
Administer medications (oral, topical, and subcutaneous injections) as needed.
Communication:
Provide regular photo/video updates to clients to ensure peace of mind.
Emergency & Critical Care Management Emergency Response:
Identify and respond immediately to "red flag" symptoms in exotic species. This includes the swift transportation of pets to 24/7 veterinary hospitals
Protocol & Advocacy:
Navigate critical situations strictly through veterinary suggestion and explicit client consent. You will act as the vital link between the hospital and the client to ensure all medical decisions align with the owner's wishes and professional advice
Clinical Liaison:
Effectively communicate the pet's state between hospital staff and the client. You must ensure the client is fully informed and that all veterinary instructions are clearly understood
Post-Hospitalization Care:
Execute specialized care plans post-discharge, including strict medication schedules, wound care, and/or specialized feeding
End-of-Life Advocacy:
In rare and unfortunate circumstances, navigate humane euthanasia or end-of-life quality-of-care protocols with extreme compassion and professional grace, always following veterinary guidance and client authorization
Requirements & Availability:
Required availability during summer months and the November through January holiday season
Transportation:
Must have a personal car
Commute:
Ability to commute throughout San Francisco, with potential commutes outside the city limits as needed
Experience:
Previous experience in a veterinary setting or advanced handling of exotic pets is highly preferred. Comfort handling feeder insects/animals is required
Reliability:
High emotional intelligence and the ability to remain decisive under pressure.
