Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a reliable, motivated Veterinary Assistant to join our emergency and urgent care veterinary hospital. This is a fast-paced ER environment where teamwork, communication, and animal handling skills are essential to patient care and hospital flow. This role is ideal for someone who is calm under pressure, eager to learn, and comfortable working in emotionally and physically demanding situations. Duties Safely and confidently restrain animals for exams, treatments, and procedures Assist veterinarians and technicians during emergency and urgent care cases Support patient triage, stabilization, and treatment flow Provide calm, professional support to patients and clients in distress Help maintain smooth workflow in a high-volume ER environment Help with patient positioning, monitoring, and transport Assist with animal restraint during examinations, treatments, and procedures to ensure safety for both animals and staff Assist with patient care tasks under supervision with precision and care Fill prescriptions and educate clients on the dosing regimen and medication requirements Support animal husbandry practices including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and maintaining overall hygiene standards Handle laboratory tasks such as sample collection, processing, and basic analysis to aid in diagnostics Maintain accurate records of treatments, medications, and patient histories using veterinary terminology and documentation protocols Support front desk operations by scheduling appointments, managing client communications, and processing payments Assist with animal catheterization, intravenous access, and other technical procedures under supervision when needed Additional duties as defined by leadership and skill level Qualifications Prior kennel experience or animal care background preferred; enthusiasm for working with animals is essential Knowledge of animal physiology, anatomy, and restraint techniques to ensure safe handling of diverse species including dogs, cats, and small mammals Experience with veterinary technician tasks such as medication administration and aseptic techniques is highly desirable Familiarity with veterinary terminology, laboratory procedures, and critical care practices enhances your ability to contribute effectively Strong animal handling skills combined with excellent communication abilities for client interactions at the front desk Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and compassion for animals Previous veterinary clinic or veterinary assistant experience is a plus; willingness to learn new skills is key What We Value Most Calm, steady presence in stressful situations Compassion for patients and empathy for clients Strong teamwork and reliability Attention to detail and willingness to learn Positive attitude in a startup environment Ability to adapt and grow with the hospital Interest in building a long-term career in veterinary medicine Genuine humans What We Offer Competitive pay based on experience Employee Pet Discount Full-time, part-time, and PRN scheduling options Employee Pet Discount HSA stipend Scrub allowance Continuing Education (CE) opportunities (as applicable) Paid Time Off (PTO) Benefits package that will grow with the hospital Opportunity to join a growing emergency veterinary team Supportive, team-oriented ER environment Career growth and skill development opportunities Application Requirements Resume or application Brief cover letter Two professional references
