Job Description

Overview We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Surgical Assistant/Veterinary Technician to join our veterinary team in a new animal hospital that just opened in August 2025. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting surgical procedures, ICU care, appointments, and ensuring the highest standards of care for our animal patients. This position requires a passion for animal welfare and a strong understanding of veterinary practices. The Surgical Assistant/Veterinary Technician will work closely with veterinarians and other staff to provide exceptional care in a fast-paced environment. As our animal hospital grows, we need to hire a part-time or full-time team member for the weekends. The schedule will require 8 or 10 hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays for 3 weekends out of the month, and one weekend off. Week-days can be flexible. Responsibilities Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures by preparing instruments and maintaining a sterile environment. Handle and restrain animals safely and compassionately during examinations and treatments. Utilize veterinary terminology effectively to communicate with team members and document procedures. Provide assistance to the veterinarian during appointment times and provide excellent customer service. Perform laboratory tasks, including sample collection and processing as required. Operate X-ray equipment under the guidance of licensed personnel. Administer medications and assist with animal catheterization when necessary. Maintain cleanliness and organization in the surgical area, adhering to aseptic techniques. Provide post-operative care, including monitoring recovery and ensuring comfort for animals. Support animal husbandry practices, including feeding, grooming, and exercising animals in the facility. Experience The ideal candidate will possess experience or knowledge in the following areas: Canine and feline handling techniques to ensure safety for both staff and animals. Ability to draw blood and knowledge of how to administer vaccines and various injections Familiarity with veterinary terminology to facilitate effective communication within the team. Laboratory skills related to sample collection, processing, and analysis. Experience with X-ray technology is preferred but not mandatory. Knowledge of animal catheterization procedures is an asset. Open schedule availability Strong understanding of animal husbandry practices to ensure optimal care. Proficiency in aseptic techniques to maintain sterile environments during surgeries. Experience in pet care settings or kennels is advantageous for understanding animal behavior and needs.
