Job Description

The Veterinary Assistant provides support to the veterinary staff of HHHS by preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and providing quality patient care.
Major Duties:
Prepare animals for surgery; perform animal restraint and handling for various medical procedures; administer vaccinations and treatments; implant microchips Follow all clinic operating policies and protocols as well as all shelter policies Sterilize and prepare surgical instruments, equipment and packs Sanitize and prepare surgery suite before and after operations; provide general custodial duties for clinic including emptying trash, mopping, and disinfecting countertops Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of clinic software; maintain proper electronic patient documentation in software Receive shipments and restock supplies Provide excellent patient care; maintain a humane and caring attitude at all times towards animal patients Interact with clients in-person, via email and telephone in a friendly, professional and helpful manner Performs humane euthanasia on shelter animals adhering to details in the shelter euthanasia policy and guidelines according to state law and the AVMA Work with other departments to ensure the organization's overall success Other projects and responsibilities may be added at the organization's discretion
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED Within six (6) months of appointment to position, must become certified and able to perform euthanasia based on shelter procedures and guidelines Strong computer and word processing skills Ability to work both independently and in a team environment Ability to interact with impounded dogs, cats and other animals including vicious, stray, sick or injured animals Ability to handle seeing and dealing with animals that have been abused, neglected or treated cruelly Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with staff Ability to work efficiently with attention to details and quality of work produced Ability to exercise good judgment in setting priorities and organization of work load
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, etc. Ability to push or pull supplies up to 25 lbs Ability to physically handle and restrain domestic animals Ability to read computer screens and mail; talk on the phone
Work Environment:
Professional and deadline-oriented environment in an office setting Interaction with staff and customers Potential exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that may be carried and transmitted by animals; potential exposure to animal bites and scratches
