Job Description

Summary The veterinary assist is responsible for the health and wellbeing of the homeless cats and dogs in need at the Lakes Region Humane Society. This rewarding position requires a reliable and hard-working individual with a history of hands-on experience in the veterinary field. We are seeking a self starter who can work collaboratively with our small and caring team of animal welfare advocates. Responsibilities Preform medical evaluations on animal intakes and record findings in the pet file. Conduct a daily walk though of the cat rooms, quarantine holds and dog kennels and lay eyes on each animal to ensure everyone appears healthy. Record and investigate animals who appear unhealthy. Check in with animal care staff to see if they have any animal-related updates to report. Scan all intakes for microchips, research ownership when necessary. Draw and test blood and fecals for each new intake and for current residents of LRHS as needed. Communicate medical care plans with Animal Care Staff to ensure animals are properly dosed with required medications. Administer and document monthly flea/tick and heartworm treatments. Administer, document and update Distemper vaccinations, boosters and medications. Set timely appointments with local veterinary offices for Rabies vaccinations, OCT's, Spay/Neuters and all other medical needs that cannot be handled on-site. Transport animals to and from veterinary appointments whenever possible or coordinate pick ups and drops offs with other members of our team. Order medical supplies. Keep pet files organized and updated (this includes, weights, ages, microchip info. boosters, behavers, etc.). Trim nails, clean ears and groom shelter pets as needed. Ensure years and fur is especially clean before submitting animals for OCT's. Research pet medical histories for strays and owner surrenders, prior to the surrender when possible and after if not. Notify the front desk when an animal becomes available for adoption or when an animal has become ill and is temporarily unavailable for adoption. Be available pre and post adoption to advise new owner on medical related questions. Crosstrain to learn how to cover for the front desk and animal care tech positions. Other duties as assigned. Skills & Abilities Veterinary Tech/Assistant experience Strong written, electronic, and verbal communication skills Familiarity with Microsoft Office and pet databases Strong understanding of disease transmission prevention Other Requirements Cover for animal care techs and front desk as needed. Manual dexterity and physical ability to handle and restrain large dogs and feral cats. Must be able to lift to 50 pounds and walk or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to tolerate animal fur, dander, and waste.
Pay:
$21.00 - $23.00 per hour
