Shelter Veterinary Assistant or Technician Heartland Shelter Medicine Olathe, KS Job Details Part-time $16.50 - $20.00 an hour 2 hours ago Benefits Paid time off Uniform allowance Qualifications Direct patient care Medical documentation Animal shelter experience Triage Sanitation Veterinary clinic experience High school diploma or GED Attention to detail Animal handling Vaccination administration Animal restraint Full Job Description Heartland Shelter Medicine is a mobile veterinary practice based in Kansas City, Missouri, providing veterinary and consulting services to animal shelters and rescue groups. (For more information about our practice, please visit heartlandsheltermed.org.) We are seeking to hire two part-time veterinary assistant(s)/technicians for positions starting in January 2026. Your primary work location for these positions will in Olathe, Kansas, but you may occasionally be asked to visit other client locations. The Olathe location has an on-site DVM two days per week. The veterinary assistant will support this DVM's role by assisting with surgeries, anesthesia, animal restraint, and other patient care as directed. When the DVM is off-site you will be tasked with monitoring and maintaining the health of the shelter's animals. This will include duties such as performing medical intake processing & triage examinations, utilizing written protocols to initiate treatments, administering booster vaccinations, performing fecal flotation, preparing specimens for rabies testing, updating medical records, and more. You will also be responsible for tasks such as equipment care, performing pharmacy and supply inventory, and clinic sanitation plus performing other services to support shelter operations and promote optimum outcomes for shelter animals. Candidates should be flexible, creative, detail-oriented and able to work independently. Formal education or a minimum of 6 months of previous experience as a veterinary assistant or technician is required. Previous experience working with animal shelter or rescue organizations is preferred. Skill or experience with social media management is also of interest, and would open up the possibility for additional remote work hours.
Pay:
$16.50 - $20.00 per hour
