Full Job Description Job Description:
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for assisting the surgery and foster team with veterinary care for all animals as defined by best practices and standard operating procedures by the Animal Defense League of Texas. Primary focus for this position is assisting the surgery team with daily pet care, animal husbandry, monitoring, preparation and distribution of medications and treatments as directed by ADL veterinarians. This position is responsible for assisting two key areas of the medical program, the surgical team and foster department. The position requires multitasking, collaboration, and teamwork in a professional manner while following ADL's core values to create a positive work environment and the ability to work with all team members i9n a fast-paced setting. This position reports to the Lead Veterinary Technicians and Hospital Director.
Veterinary Assistant Job Duties:
  • Assist foster department with AM/PM housekeeping as needed while maintaining a healthy environment following ADL protocols and PPE guidelines
  • Assist surgery and foster teams with animal husbandry, feedings, restraint for exams, daily patient care, monitoring, and submitting medslips according to medical protocols.
  • Assist surgical team with incoming surgical patients through public and partner services, post operative recovery coverage, and pet observation.
  • Assist preparing vaccinations and medications for ADL pets and public or partner spay/neuter programs.
  • Assist with updating animal records by documenting animal conditions and treatments prescribed by ADL veterinarians and updating information accurately into PetPoint.
  • Assist with intake workups for friendly ferals to adopt through community cat spay/neuter programs.
  • Assist in all areas of need within the medical department such as foster with pet intakes or appointments.
  • Assist with completion of daily tasks assigned to the surgery team whiteboard related to patient care and individual pet needs, prioritize those needing tests to confirm contagious disease.
  • Complete daily open and closing chores lists, disassemble workstations, proper sanitation, restock and rest areas for next day.
  • Perform weekly and bi-weekly maintenance on surgical equipment and properly handle surgical instruments for cleaning and through sterilization process.
  • Participate and assist with non-ADL pet services such as COSA ferals, community cats, publicly owned pets, and shelter partner pet programs and COSA community pet vaccination and microchip clinics throughout the community for pet wellness.
Veterinary Assistant Requirements and Qualifications Create a positive work environment and ability to work with all staff cohesively with a positive attitude. One (1) year experience in animal care or a high-volume clinic or setting preferred. Must follow ADL Medical Program Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Ability to identify pet health, behavior and symptoms related to disease. Perform basic exams using safe/humane animal handling and restraint for all species Ability to identify common medications and tools in veterinary medicine. Administer medications orally and SQ. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft programs (Word/Outlook) Must display professional communication skills with coworkers, and clients. Able to work weekends, holidays, or schedule changes if necessary, according to hospital needs. Physical demands and working conditions Physical requirements include frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds with assistance/ visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity. Subject to climbing, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are inside and outside with frequent exposure to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, noise, contagious environment requiring full PPE, confining workspace, and unfavorable odors. Must be able comfortable and able to perform duties on both species (canine and feline) of all shapes and sizes, including feral or fractious cats. Must be able to perform multiple tasks independently, accurately, efficiently in a fast-paced and, at times, an emotional environment.
