Job Description

Waterloo Veterinary Care:
Veterinary Assistant/CSR Job Requirements Possess the knowledge and skills required to assist veterinarians and technicians in order to treat sick or injured animals by assisting with physical exams, diagnostic procedures, surgeries, dentals, and dispensing medications. Ability to function in a variety of clinical situations and to perform a wide spectrum of patient care including initiating the needs of the patient, client, and veterinarian and technicians. The veterinary assistant should be able to execute motor activities reasonably required to provide general care and safe restraint (including fractious and aggressive patients), to assist with diagnostic procedures and surgeries efficiently, and to provide emergency treatment to patients. Sufficient technical skills and motor function to draw blood, trim toenails, take samples, take radiographs, perform fecals and urinalysis tests, and obtain and read cytology samples effectively if those situations arise. The ability to lift 50 pounds or assist with transporting patients. Ability to work on your own and in a team setting. The skill to multi-task and use time effectively and efficiently. Assist all staff when necessary to help them complete their tasks and allow the clinic to run smoothly. This includes flexibility with covering shifts for vacation or sick time. Ability to answer the phone, schedule appointments, perform tasks in Impromed Infinity software, admitting and discharging patients, over the counter sales, financial transactions, filing records, client call-backs for patient follow-up, and building and equipment maintenance. Must express principles, attitudes, and behaviors that are moral and ethical and have the basic scientific knowledge that is essential for a responsible veterinary assistant to possess. Effective problem-solving skills, confidence in decision-making, and the ability to collaborate with peers appropriately. Communicate effectively, efficiently, compassionately, and sensitively with owners, staff, and visitors expressing integrity and concern for others. This includes speech, reading, and writing. Communicate with clients on exam findings, patient diagnosis, treatment plans, preventative health care, nutritional needs, and end of life care. Continue communications for follow-up with clients for the best patient outcome. Ability to speak with clients and to hear and observe patients to obtain information, in regards to attitude, activity, posture, and understanding nonverbal cues. Assist with keeping appropriate, complete medical records and logs and finish them in a timely manner consistent with the clinic's form of record keeping. Commitment to keeping abreast of new information and standards of care in the field of veterinary medicine and help to incorporate it appropriately into the practice's policies. Commitment to adapting to change and assisting the clinic to advance with technology. Assisting in the development of the entire staff to allow the delivery of the high-quality care and client service. Present a positive image of the clinic in the professional community and general public.' '
