Pomona, CA Job Details Full-time $20 - $26 an hour 1 day ago Benefits Paid time off Flexible schedule Qualifications Teamwork Phlebotomy High school diploma or GED Clinical documentation Animal welfare Perioperative care Animal husbandry Full Job Description Position Overview The Surgical Technician at GMD Labs provides critical support for preclinical surgical procedures, ensuring the smooth execution of surgeries, proper care for research animals, and adherence to facility and regulatory standards. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, team-focused professional with a strong foundation in surgical preparation, anesthesia, and basic animal husbandry. All employees at GMD Labs, including the Surgical Technician, are expected to have foundational knowledge of animal care and perform basic vivarium or kennel cleaning tasks independently. For this role, availability must be flexible hours Monday - Friday and at least one weekend a month.
Key Responsibilities Surgical Support:
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of preclinical surgical procedures.
  • Prepare surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring they are properly sterilized and organized.
  • Perform technical tasks such as IV catheter placement, vascular and arterial catheterizations, drug calculations, and administering and monitoring anesthesia.
  • Prepare animals for surgery, including fasting, pre-anesthetic administration, and positioning.
  • Monitor patients during surgery to ensure stability and report any concerns to the surgical or veterinary team.
Animal Care and Husbandry Knowledge:
  • Assist in pre- and post-surgical animal care, including feeding, watering, and behavior observation.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary animal enclosures in compliance with facility protocols.
  • Keep detailed records and report any abnormalities in animal health to the veterinary team.
Operating Room Maintenance:
  • Clean and maintain surgical rooms and equipment before and after procedures to ensure a sterile environment.
  • Restock and organize surgical supplies and equipment to support efficient operations.
Compliance and Safety:
  • Adhere to all institutional and regulatory guidelines for animal care and surgical protocols.
  • Follow safety procedures to protect staff, animals, and equipment during surgical operations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures, inventory, and patient care records.
Team Collaboration and Development:
  • Work closely with the surgical team to ensure coordinated and efficient operations.
  • Support the Lead Surgical Technician in implementing best practices and mentoring new staff members.
Qualifications Education and Certifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification preferred.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification or equivalent is a plus.
Experience and Skills:
  • 2+ years of experience in a clinical or preclinical veterinary environment (Preferred).
  • Applicants must have hands-on knowledge of animal husbandry practices and a strong commitment to animal welfare.
  • Proficiency in running anesthesia, surgery preparation, and basic surgical techniques.
  • Skill set in IV catheter placement, animal handling and restraint, and phlebotomy.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities for surgical support and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while also being an effective team player.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Google Suite.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks that require standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working with large animals; no known animal allergies.
Work Environment:
  • In-person work required at GMD Labs' Pomona, CA facility.
