Veterinary Technician / Animal Care Specialist Milo Foundation - 3.5 Pt Richmond, CA Job Details Part-time $21 - $23 an hour 21 hours ago Benefits Health insurance 401(k) Paid time off Qualifications Companion animal handling Teamwork Medical documentation Triage Medication pass administration Dog handling Veterinary technician experience Full Job Description Veterinary Technician / Animal Care Specialist - Shelter Medicine & Rescue Position Summary The Milo Foundation is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician / Animal Care Specialist to join our Shelter Medicine team. This role is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of animals in our care, from intake through adoption. The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, and comfortable balancing medical responsibilities with the unpredictable nature of animal rescue. Successful team members are flexible, solution-oriented, and understand that helping animals sometimes means stepping outside their primary job duties to support the broader rescue operation. Responsibilities Medical Care & Shelter Medicine Work closely with the Lead Animal Health Technician and medical team to provide preventative, routine, and emergency medical care. Perform physical examinations and assess normal and abnormal health parameters in canine and feline patients. Assist with intake evaluations, medical triage, and treatment planning for incoming rescue animals. Administer medications and treatments, including subcutaneous fluids, injections, wound care, bandaging, and other nursing care. Collect diagnostic samples, perform blood draws, assist with laboratory testing, and maintain accurate medical records. Assist with microchipping, vaccination and high-volume SNIP clinics. Monitor animals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery. Rescue Operations & Animal Care Support the intake and transition of animals from partner shelters and rescue organizations. Assist with infectious disease management and implementation of shelter-wide biosecurity protocols. Collaborate with adoption counselors, volunteers, animal care staff, foster coordinators, and outside veterinary specialists to support positive outcomes for animals. Help identify medical or behavioral concerns and communicate observations effectively to the team. Teamwork & Flexibility Embrace the fast-paced nature of rescue work and adapt to changing priorities throughout the day. Step in to assist with animal handling, kennel support, transport coordination, and other operational needs when necessary. Participate in problem-solving and decision-making that supports the overall mission of the organization. Maintain a positive attitude and willingness to help wherever needed, understanding that animal rescue is a team effort. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in veterinary medicine, shelter medicine, animal rescue, or a related field. Strong technical skills, including blood draws, medication administration, sample collection, and patient monitoring. Experience recognizing common medical conditions and abnormalities in dogs and cats. Ability to remain calm and effective in a busy, sometimes emotionally challenging environment. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with a diverse team of staff, volunteers, and partners. Ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. Shelter medicine or rescue experience strongly preferred.
Pay:
$21.00 - $23.00 per hour
