As an RVT, you will be a vital part of providing exceptional patient care, supporting veterinarians, exceptional client service, and ensuring smooth clinic operations. Registered Veterinary Technician Job Description Working with doctors and the rest of the hospital care team, the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for using low-stress handling techniques to provide direct patient care for both in-patient and out-patient animals. This includes conducting examinations within scope, performing laboratory duties and treatments, drug dosages and dispensing, and assisting with surgeries. This position also provides direct communication to clients. Finally, where required, the RVT is responsible for the maintenance of instruments and equipment, medical record-keeping, client communications, general housekeeping, inventory, and other duties as required to ensure efficient operations and high-quality care.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Patient Care Reviewing the upcoming schedule and planning/preparing for procedures, including triaging patient care and treatments by coordinating with other staff members. Administering vaccines and intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular and oral medications. Calculating drug doses, use, potential side effects, proper administration, and ensuring control/recording of controlled drugs. Reviewing medications prepared by Veterinary Assistants. Filling/dispensing medications for patients Performing treatments such as wound care, bandage/splint changes, and ear cleanings as required by the doctor. Collecting specimens and performing routine laboratory work in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology. Performing and/or assisting the doctor in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of diagnostic equipment including basic ocular, electrocardiographic, radiographic, and ultrasonographic equipment. Hospitalizing patients under the supervision of the doctor including placement of an intravenous catheter, intravenous fluid administration, medication administration, and monitoring vital signs. Complete hospital admissions (i.e. verifying consent forms, patient information, medications, and fasting status). Performing sedation, general anesthesia, and patient monitoring including safety, emergency drugs, administration and when to intervene, intubation, extubation and recovery. Performing dental treatments including scaling, polishing, performing an antibacterial rinse and dental radiographs. Monitoring time requirements and ensuring medical records are kept up to date. Managing weight-loss programs under the direction of the doctor. Assisting doctors in exam rooms as required. Assisting with humane euthanasia as required. Other duties as assigned. Customer Service & Client Communication Educating clients on care and treatment Updating clients on patients in the hospital and performing discharges Creating discharge/home care instructions Performing callbacks/emails as needed for progress reports Answering client questions that do not require a doctor Facilitate communications (phone, text, email and in-person) and cultivate positive client experiences Interact with veterinary professionals and escalate complex communications when appropriate Facilitate and manage appointment and surgical schedules in partnership with doctors and the practice manager Maintain accurate and up-to-date records (including client communications) Ensure that all fees associated with a patient are placed on the patient visit list, in collaboration with the Veterinary Assistant Prepare estimates for procedures and care Other duties as assigned Technology Focus Familiarity and comfort with computers and cloud-based software for patient care and management. ]t is an asset but not required Fielding and responding to electronic communications When requested, fielding and managing multi-line phone systems Equipment Perform cleaning and routine maintenance (as needed) of all equipment including anesthetic, laboratory, and x-ray machines to ensure equipment is in working order Clean and care for surgical instruments (including wrapping packs and managing the autoclave cycles)Assist with restocking and inventory management (as directed) Maintaining radiology log Maintaining lists of supplies to be ordered. Placing orders, when requested Inventory management and stocking supplies as needed. Other duties as assigned Facilities Maintain a clean, safe, and inviting environment, adhering to OSHA requirements Comply with and complete requirements related to the administration and management of controlled substances, ensuring DEA compliance Other duties as assigned Training Participate in the development and training of other technicians and veterinary assistants (under the direction of the PM and Medical Director) Participate in annual compliance training programs, including radiation safety
