The Veterinary Surgical Technician plays a vital role in supporting veterinarians before, during, and after surgical procedures. This position is responsible for patient preparation, anesthesia monitoring, surgical assistance, post-operative care, client education, and maintaining accurate medical records. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, compassionate, and thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment. Key Responsibilities Assist in surgeries Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-anesthetic evaluations and patient setup. Administer and monitor anesthesia under veterinarian supervision. Continuously monitor patient vital signs and anesthetic depth during procedures. Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures by passing instruments, maintaining patient stability, and anticipating surgical needs. Prepare Surgical Environments Sterilize and prepare surgical instruments and equipment. Maintain aseptic technique and a sterile surgical field. Ensure all surgical supplies, instruments, and monitoring equipment are properly set up and functioning before procedures begin. Perform surgical suite cleaning and maintenance according to hospital protocols. Post-Operative Patient Care Monitor patients during anesthesia recovery and provide appropriate supportive care. Administer medications, fluids, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian. Assess pain levels and patient comfort during recovery. Document patient progress and report any concerns promptly to the veterinarian. Client Communication and Education Educate pet owners on post-operative care, medication administration, activity restrictions, and recovery expectations. Answer client questions regarding surgical procedures and recovery plans. Provide discharge instructions and ensure client understanding prior to patient release. Medical Records and Documentation Maintain accurate and complete medical records. Document anesthesia logs, medications administered, surgical notes, and patient observations. Ensure compliance with hospital policies, legal requirements, and medical record standards. Required QualificationsEducation Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program required. Certification Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Anesthesia & Analgesia or Surgery preferred but not required. Technical Skills Strong knowledge of anesthesia protocols and monitoring techniques. Proficiency in surgical instrumentation and aseptic techniques. Ability to perform venipuncture, catheter placement, laboratory procedures, and patient nursing care. Familiarity with veterinary practice management software and electronic medical records. Communication and Interpersonal Skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with veterinarians and support staff. Strong client education and customer service skills. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for larger patients. Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a physically demanding environment. Manual dexterity sufficient to handle surgical instruments and medical equipment. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a veterinary surgical setting. Advanced anesthesia monitoring experience. Experience with orthopedic, soft tissue, laparoscopic, or specialty surgical procedures. Work Environment Veterinary Surgical Technicians typically work in veterinary hospitals, specialty surgical centers, emergency hospitals, or research facilities. Compensation:
Compensation is competitive and will be determined based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and productivity.
Relocation Assistance:
Relocation assistance of up to $1,000 may be available for eligible candidates, subject to established eligibility requirements and repayment terms if applicable
Pay:
$27.00 - $30.00 per hour
