Overview Reporting to VCS Management, the Veterinary Technologist 2 will provide health care to numerous species of laboratory animals, including non-human primates. Perform physical exams, provide preventive health care, assist with administration of anesthesia and analgesia, and provide emergency case support. Perform basic and intermediate technical procedures on a fee-for-service basis. Provide weekend and holiday coverage. Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of job duties. Essential Duties Provide health care for numerous species of laboratory animals, including non-human primates. Perform physical exams, provide preventive health care, perform veterinary treatments, provide surgical and emergency case support, and perform euthanasia. Maintain detailed, accurate clinical records. Under the guidance of the veterinarians, ensure the welfare of the animals and comply with regulations governing their humane and ethical treatment. Perform basic and intermediate technical animal procedures for researchers. Interact with researchers to better provide high quality animal care and customer service. Anesthetize laboratory animals and serve as a scrub nurse during procedures under the guidance of a qualified veterinary technologist or veterinarian. Administer immediate and intermediate post-operative care and treatments to animals. Assist with performing diagnostic laboratory animal procedures (e.g., imaging and sample collection). Ship biological samples as needed. Train University personnel in methods of animal technology and standard Veterinary Clinical Service procedures. Provide instruction for a variety of routine technical procedures and activities related to the care of various animals used in research. Ensure readiness of VCS areas, supplies, and equipment for routine and emergency procedures. Perform additional functions incidental to veterinary animal technology activities. •Must Pass YARC (Yale Animal Resources Center) Health Screening. •This form is filed with Employee Health in a confidential file specific to employees who work at YSM Buildings. Offer is contingent upon successful passing of health screening.
Work days and work hours:
Tuesday-Saturday 8am-4pm Participate regularly in on-call schedule for weeknight, weekend, recess, and holiday coverage. Skills & Abilities 1. Thorough knowledge of veterinary technology, procedures, and protocols. Ability to follow SOPs, Policies, and Clinical Guidelines. 2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including proven experience of working successfully within a team. 3. Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to multi-task. 4. Ability to work well under pressure. 5. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have good manual dexterity to restrain, examine, and treat various laboratory animal species. Principal Responsibilities 1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for research projects. Interprets, synthesizes, and analyzes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 2. Modifies and plans research experiments, procedures, tests, or survey instruments. Assists in research design. Writes and edits material for publication and presentation. Reports on status of research activities. 3. Oversees and instructs research and support staff on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. Schedules and coordinates research activities. Sets up, operates, and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. Modifies equipment according to experimental specifications. 4. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May monitor hazardous work areas and laboratory safety. Prepares related reports. May prepare financial information and monitor budgets. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities. Required Education and Experience Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
