Job Description
Lee County is seeking a caring, detail-oriented, and dedicated Veterinary Assistant to support the daily medical and surgical care of animals in our shelter. In this role, you will work closely with our Veterinarian to help provide safe, humane, and effective treatment for animals in need. You'll assist with medical procedures, surgeries, daily care, and record-keeping, helping create a healthy and compassionate environment for both animals and the community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, can stay calm under pressure, and is passionate about helping animals receive the care they deserve. What You Will Do Assist the Veterinarian during medical exams and surgeries Give injections, medications, and other treatments as directed Prepare animals for surgery and monitor them during recovery Perform basic lab work and maintain clean, safe work areas Handle, move, and care for animals of all sizes Keep drugs and medical supplies secure and organized Complete simple office tasks, records, and computer work Help train staff on safe animal handling, microchip scanning, and identifying signs of illness Maintain positive, respectful communication with coworkers, partners, and the public Work in various environments, including outdoor areas and all weather conditions What We're Looking For Associate's Degree or two years of college in veterinary technology or a similar field, OR an equivalent mix of education and experience One (1) year of experience in a veterinary clinic, shelter medicine, or related field Florida Euthanasia Certification or the ability to earn it within 90 days of hire Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record Knowledge and Skills Basic knowledge of veterinary medical and surgical procedures Familiarity with common animal illnesses, injuries, and treatments Understanding of animal-related laws, such as rabies rules and animal licensing Ability to use office and veterinary equipment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook Strong verbal and written communication skills Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 80 pounds Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for long periods Ability to safely handle and move animals, equipment, and supplies Work Schedule Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Holidays, weekends, and emergency shifts may be required based on shelter needs.
