Full Job Description Summary:
The Animal Care Technician provides care, sanitation, monitoring, and enrichment for animals during their stay at Paws Humane Society, with a primary focus on the medical care and intake process. This position assists with the safe and efficient intake of animals, supports medical protocols, monitors animal health and behavior, maintains accurate records, and helps ensure animals receive appropriate care from arrival through placement. The Animal Care Technician also provides support to internal teams and members of the public while representing Paws Humane Society in a professional and compassionate manner. Essential Job Functions Medical Intake and Animal Care Perform daily cleaning, maintenance, feeding, watering, and care for animals housed in the shelter. Assist with the intake process for animals entering Paws Humane Society, including gathering information, scanning for microchips, weighing animals, assigning identification, and ensuring accurate records are created or updated. Perform intake-related medical tasks according to Paws Humane Society protocols, which may include administering vaccines, dewormer, flea prevention, microchips, diagnostic tests, and other routine treatments as directed. Observe animals at intake for signs of illness, injury, pain, stress or other medical concerns. Promptly document and report medical or behavioral concerns to the appropriate supervisor or medical team member. Assist with medical exams, rechecks, treatments, and handling or restraint of animals as needed. Monitor animals daily for changes in appetite, behavior, stool, energy level, mobility, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, wounds, or other concerns. Follow all disease prevention, isolation, quarantine, and sanitation protocols to protect the health and safety of shelter animals, staff, volunteers, and the public. Maintain cleanliness, organization, and efficiency in animal housing areas, intake areas, treatment spaces, and other assigned areas. Monitor and stock animal care, intake, sanitation, and medical supplies. Provide daily exercise and enrichment for animals, including walking dogs, placing dogs in play yards or play groups when appropriate, and providing species-appropriate enrichment. Records and Communication Properly utilize shelter database/software to manage animal records and keep information accurate and up to date. Document intake information, medical observations, treatments, vaccines, medications, behavior notes, and other relevant animal information in a timely and accurate manner. Communicate clearly and professionally with animal care, clinic , foster, and leadership teams regarding animal needs and concerns. Ensure animals with medical or behavioral concerns are clearly identified and appropriately communicated to staff. Assist with maintaining current kennel cards, animal identification, medical alerts, and other animal information as assigned. Attend and participate in trainings and staff meetings as requested. Customer Service and Public Interaction Provide excellent customer service and exercise friendly, helpful, and professional interaction with the public, always projecting a positive image of Paws Humane Society. Assist members of the public with basic intake-related needs, including checking found animals for a microchip when appropriate. Offer guidance and assistance to the public as they enter the building or interact with shelter staff. Become knowledgeable about Paws Humane Society, including its mission, available programs, and services. Respond professionally and timely to phone messages, emails, or internal communications related to intake, animal care, or assigned duties. Gratefully receive donations and assist with completion of donation forms when needed. Maintain a clean and organized work environment throughout the day. General Duties Possess a clear understanding of and adhere to standard operating procedures and the policies and procedures of Paws Humane Society. Be on time and present for scheduled shifts; maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance. Work efficiently, with attention to detail, and demonstrate initiative, motivation, and commitment to the position and Paws Humane Society. Follow the directives of supervisors and leadership. Work closely and respectfully with staff, volunteers, fosters, community service workers, and other individuals assisting the organization. Provide training or guidance to volunteers and community service workers as assigned. Engage with volunteers professionally and respectfully, including communicating gratitude for their service and dedication when appropriate. Assist with animal photographs, videos, biographies, publicity, or marketing needs when requested. Assist with offsite events, transports, or special projects as assigned. Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and/or Qualifications Necessary to Perform Essential Job Functions Must have a valid driver's license and MVR record insurable by commercial insurance. Must be physically able to perform fast-paced, physically strenuous labor that requires walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, and cleaning for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to handle animals safely and effectively, including animals who are fearful, stressed, sick, injured, fractious, or have unknown histories. Must be comfortable working with dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, protocols, and treatment plans. Must have strong attention to detail, especially when documenting medical information, animal identification, treatments, and intake records. Must be able to recognize and report signs of illness, injury, pain, stress, or behavioral concern.
Pay:
$14.00 - $15.00 per hour
