Are you ready to advance your career as a Veterinary Technician in Anesthesia, working as a leader in veterinary medicine, education, and research? The Veterinary Anesthesia Technician at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University provides high quality anesthesia care across a variety of caseloads that includes small animal, large animal, and emergency procedures. Under the guidance of faculty anesthesiologists and experienced anesthesia technicians, this role emphasizes patient advocacy, pain management, perioperative anxiety reduction, and overall patient wellbeing. The technician supports all phases of anesthesia, including patient assessment, protocol development, induction, monitoring, and recovery.
What You Will Do:
You will work closely with clinicians, residents, interns, veterinary students, and fellow technicians.
Key responsibilities include:
Anesthesia and Patient Care:
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia for a wide range of species and case complexities, including ASA I through V.
  • Develop and implement anesthetic protocols in collaboration with anesthesia faculty.
  • Perform patient assessments, pre anesthetic preparation, induction, maintenance, and recovery.
  • Monitor patients using advanced modalities such as ECG, capnography, and invasive blood pressure.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to anesthetic complications.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records.
  • Manage daily caseload efficiently while meeting established procedural timelines.
  • Support and mentor veterinary students during anesthesia procedures.
Role Details to
Know:
  • This position is fully onsite at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center.
  • The role involves the ability to safely restrain, move, and assist with procedures involving both companion and large animal species.
  • Participation in an on call rotation is required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays to support emergency and after-hours anesthesia services.
  • The role involves physical activity, including lifting, and exposure to typical veterinary care environments such as bodily fluids and chemicals.
  • Comprehensive training, personal protective equipment, and team support are provided.
Recruitment Incentive:
Successful candidates hired into a Veterinary Technician
I/II/III
position in the College of Veterinary Medicine's Anesthesia department between 5/1/2026 and 6/30/2027 may be eligible to receive a recruitment incentive of $1,000. Payment terms and conditions will be provided in a payment agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience assisting with anesthetic induction, maintenance, and recovery under supervision in a teaching or referral hospital setting. Exposure to specialty or referral level clinical services such as surgery, emergency, ICU, or advanced diagnostics during veterinary technician training. Experience using veterinary anesthesia machines and patient monitoring equipment as part of clinical rotations or externship requirements. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
