Job Description

Position Summary Veterinary Technicians at the Metro East Humane Society (MEHS) work directly with the Shelter Veterinarian to provide high quality patient care to the shelter animals. Duties include but may not be limited to following protocols established by the veterinarian, gentle handling and restraint of patients, venipuncture, perform laboratory tests, administer vaccinations and injections, fill prescriptions, educate and communicate well with the public, document information in patient files, assist in surgery, anesthesia and patient monitoring, calculate drug dosages, place intravenous catheters and administer intravenous or subcutaneous fluids, sterilize surgical packs, clerical work including answering foster emails and/or phone calls, update patient data, and completing transactions. I can't imagine a more fulfilling career. -Lysa Strotheide, Senior LVT, 5 years at MEHS Desired Qualifications and Experience High school diploma or equivalent Diploma from a recognized Veterinary Technician program preferred Computer knowledge and skills Previous technical and veterinary practice experience Position Requirements Communication skills grounded in respect Efficient time management Handle multiple, unrelated tasks simultaneously while working in a fast-paced environment Self-motivation with attention to detail Compassion and gentleness for all patients Coachable with the ability to accept constructive criticism Standing and walking for extended periods up to 10 hours daily Performance Expectations Greet public in a friendly manner, especially during surgical intake and discharge Answer incoming phone calls and emails in a timely and professional manner, as needed Quickly learn computer system and daily surgical workflow Educate and answer public's inquiries about veterinary recommendations, animal care and common procedures, shelter protocols, medications, and basic behavioral issues Maintain a clean working environment Administer vaccinations and medications Collect blood, urine, and fecal specimens Knowledge of commonly used pharmaceuticals Knowledge of shelter protocols Operate the microscope and view slides Keep surgery room and intake room organized and well stocked Calculate and document drug dosages Assist in surgery and appropriate scrub protocol Monitor recovering surgical patients and perform a brief exam Run and clean the autoclave Clean surgical instruments, operate the ultrasonic cleaner, and pack instruments
