Job Summary Summary Provide animal care and medical assistance for laboratory animals. Perform rounds, triage, treat, and monitor basic clinical cases. Assist with collecting diagnostic and health surveillance samples. Assist the veterinary team and other hospital staff by caring for and cleaning patients and facilities, including completing patient treatments. Provides research support by communicating with the research regarding clinical cases and documentation. In addition to other tasks involved in the operation of the animal research program. After hours, rotating weekend and holiday work may be required. Does this position require Patient Care? No Essential Functions Be knowledgeable in the daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, cleaning cages, and maintaining appropriate living environments. Prep for trainings and procedures, schedule and conduct basic technical skill trainings for investigators and peers as needed. Perform basic animal restraint, minimize stress, and ensure the safety of both animals and personnel. Perform regular health checks and observations to identify signs of illness or distress in the animals, promptly reporting any concerns to the veterinary team. Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, and respiration) and perform a general examination to assess overall health. Assist veterinary staff with routine health assessments, medical treatments, and procedures for laboratory animals. Perform drug calculations and administer medications. Maintains animal records by documenting animal conditions, reactions, and changes, updating the database. Ensure compliance with all institutional, regulatory, and ethical guidelines governing animal research and welfare. Be familiar with IACUC protocols and policies to evaluate clinical signs for routine humane endpoints. Qualifications Education Associate's Degree Veterinary Technology preferred Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? Yes Licenses and Credentials Certified Laboratory Animal Technician [LAT] - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science preferred Experience Experience in laboratory animal or veterinary care 1-2 years required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Basic skills and animal care, and health Excellent time management skills. Ability to find and abide by institutional SOPs and policies, works with moderate supervision. Knowledge of basic vet procedures, sample collection, and basic treatments. Works with close supervision.
