Job Description

Job Overview:
The veterinary technician is to provide compassionate and quality care to our patients. Technicians should be patient advocates with a strong interest in career growth and personal development. The individual should be able to work in a team environment but also be able to work autonomously.
Essential Job Functions :
To perform this job successfully an individual should be able to perform the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:  Placing IVC (catheter) placement on patients.  Maintain and administer fluids and medications to patients.  Perform laboratory skills such as run urine samples, complete blood chemistries, and microscopic analysis. 
Phlebotomy:
taking blood from a patient.  Obtain patient history and patient vitals (temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate).  Restrain, lift, and carry patients.  Utilize a variety of electronic equipment such as a computers and iPads.  Triage patients according to severity and monitor ongoing activities in consideration of changing patient conditions.
General Responsibilities and Duties:
 Provide client education such as diabetic discharges and at home medication administration.  Properly fill and label prescriptions.  Clean equipment and cages, stock inventory, and do laundry.  Train other employees.  Take radiographs on patients.  Anesthetic monitoring for both major and minor procedures.  Set up, sterilize, and clean up for surgeries and other procedures.  Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).  Assist with euthanasia's and after care.  Attend team or all staff meetings as they come up.  Ethical responsibility to keep confidential patient records and information about clients.
Required Skills/Abilities:
 Team player.  Strong communication skills
  • both verbal and written communication.  Ability to work in a high
  • stress environment.
 Ability to multitask with attention to detail.  Shared goal to help animals and local community.  Desire to continue learning.  Fine motor skills with hands and good hand eye coordination.  Excellent customer service.
Environmental and Physical Environment:
 Ambulation
  • being able to walk, bend, and stand for majority of the shift up to 12 to 14 hours.
 Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted and 50 pounds assisted.  Schedule flexibility such as flexing days or staying later after shift if needed to meet the needs of hospital.  Animal noise including crying, barking or vocalizing patients.  May be exposed to foul pet odor.  Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases.  Danger of being bitten or scratched.  Possible exposure to gas anesthesia, radiation (both radiology and CT).  Exposure to drugs and chemicals.  Follow health and safety procedures as outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards/requirements.
Qualifications:
 Basic medical math and calculations.  Entry-level veterinary knowledge.  Registered Veterinary Technician or previous vet experience preferred.  VTS preferred.  Smartflow and Cornerstone experience preferred.  Bilingual preferred.
