Job Description

Humane Society of South Mississippi Kennel Technician Department:
Clinic Classification:
Non-exempt, hourly
Supervisor:
Clinic Manager/Director/Veterinarians Position Summary:
This person is primarily responsible for ensuring the daily sanitation of the animal housing areas, assisting in post-operative monitoring, laundry, and overall organization of the clinic.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
This person MUST be a team player and be willing to assist in any area for which he/she has been trained. Having knowledge of animal diseases, proper sanitation practices, animal behavior and handling is preferred. He/she must possess excellent customer service skills even though public contact is minimal in this position. Kennel Technicians must be able to function well in a fast-paced environment. All HSSM employees are expected to have a strong work ethic and be attentive to the details that help ensure the health and well-being of the animals in our charge. All staff must be committed to the mission of the HSSM.
Qualifications:
Must be 18 or older, able to lift 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation, and be able to stand, walk, and lift up to 40 pounds over an entire shift. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Disinfects and cleans all kennels and cages daily. Does laundry and maintains supply of clean bedding for kennels daily. Makes surgery packs daily. Maintains a healthy environment and high level of care for the animals Sanitizes floors, counters, and other surfaces as needed to help minimize the chance of disease spread Observes animals to detect illness or diseases , isolating them and reporting observations to veterinarian technician Collection and transportation of waste to outside garbage containers Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area Communicates supply needs to the appropriate person for ordering. Makes sure animals are bedded down for the night to include provisions for food and water when appropriate. Assists in monitoring animals post-operatively for any signs of a problem, i.e., bleeding, swelling, etc. Assists the surgery recovery technician in bringing animals to the clinic for surgery or taking them back to the shelter after recovery from surgery Restrains animals for pre-operative veterinary examination Assists with intake and discharge of animal patients to the public. Moves animals from the operating room into the appropriate housing areas once recovered adequately from surgery Assists in monitoring animals during recovery and stimulates them as necessary to ensure the animal is breathing appropriately. Other duties as assigned.
General Expectations:
This person must help promote and maintain a positive, productive work environment Ability to lift up to 50lbs unassisted, be on feet all day Kennel technicians must follow established guidelines in keeping with OSHA requirements and Humane Alliance recommendations Promotes integration and engagement of volunteers. Promotes communication and cooperation between HSSM departments. Kennel technicians must work as part of a team and constantly strive to ensure a smooth transition for the animals coming from the operating room into various housing areas.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a fast-paced clinic setting. Exposure to high noise levels and cleaning agents when in kennel areas is likely. Due to extensive animal handling, animal bites and scratches can occur. Kennel technicians must be able to handle animals of questionable health and temperament. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation occurs often. Standing, bending and stretching for 8-10 hours per day is common. Exposure to zoonotic diseases can occur.
