Job Description

Job Overview Kennel Technicians (KTs) are responsible for the daily care of all animals at the Anson County Animal Shelter, including but not limited to feeding, cleaning, walking, socializing, and medicating. This position conducts proper cleaning and disinfecting of all kennels and rooms to provide a healthy environment for the animals in our care and for those visiting the facility. The Kennel Technicians provide our animals with love, compassion, daily exercise, and enrichment and administers daily medications as directed by the Shelter Director. Essential Skills and Experience Strong communication skills are essential so the Shelter Director is aware of any developing issues with animals in our care and with shelter operations in general. Therefore, a Kennel Technician must have effective verbal and written communication skills plus interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate for this job is resourceful, detail oriented, organized and has a professional demeanor and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment. Kennel Technicians must give excellent attention to detail and possess a sense of urgency and the ability to prioritize with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work. The Kennel Technician must be proficient or willing to gain proficiency in the use of online, shared documents and any other computer databases required for the job. This position requires walking, bending and lifting. Reliable transportation and the ability to arrive to work as scheduled is needed. Previous animal rescue and/or veterinary work background is a bonus. This position requires a flexible work week with the ability to work weekends and holidays. Responsibilities of a Kennel Technician Comfortably handle a variety of sizes and temperaments for both dogs and cats. Thoroughly clean and disinfect all animal dog kennels and cat cages daily and more frequently when needed. Wash and sterilize water and food bowls. Feed and monitor eating habits of all animals. Observe and report animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, injury, disease, unusual activity and discontent to the Shelter Director. Provide exercise and enrichment for all animals Ensure shelter grounds are constantly clean, picking up any trash and stool material. Wash and dry towels, blankets, and any other laundry. Transport animals to veterinary clinics for treatment and surgeries when requested. Properly stock and organize all animal holding rooms. Make sure cages and animals are properly numbered and identified throughout the shelter including tagging kennels and cages for animals that have confirmed placement. Assist with updating shared files for animal content. Maintain supplies in an orderly manner. Assist with answering the shelter telephone. Regularly check and respond to company email and use company assigned account(s) for email communication pertaining to the shelter. Additional responsibilities as requested by the Shelter Director. Expectations of a Kennel Technician Kennel Technicians are a reflection of FACAS. This position interacts greatly with volunteers and community members and is expected to convey a positive image as an employee and community member. Kenneal Technicians must work cohesively with the heavily volunteer-powered organization. Kennel Technicians are expected to problem-solve and maintain open communication with other employees at FACAS. Kennel Technicians are expected to create and foster a collaborative team environment. Kennel Technicians are expected to report any suspicions of mistreatment to the Shelter Director immediately. Kennel Technicians must be able to follow verbal and written directions, accept positive feedback, accept constructive criticism, self-reflect, and seek to continuously improve. Qualifications Prior kennel experience or animal husbandry background preferred; strong animal handling skills are essential Knowledge of veterinary terminology, pet care practices, and animal physiology beneficial Experience with dog handling, animal restraint techniques, and medication administration required Familiarity with veterinary clinic procedures or veterinary assistant experience is a plus Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members and clients Physical stamina to stand, walk, lift animals, and perform cleaning duties throughout the shift This role is perfect for motivated individuals passionate about animal welfare who want to grow their skills in a dynamic veterinary setting.
