Pleasant Animal Shelter seeks a veterinary technician to join a dynamic team of professionals to provide medical care and monitor the health and welfare of animals at its shelter. This position offers a unique opportunity to work for an organization that has committed to changing the lives of homeless, abandoned, or neglected animals for more than 50 years! In this position, you will provide a wide range of medical care and guidance to support the shelter animals and those that may be in foster, but still under our care. Your duties are to provide humane and compassionate care in a way that is friendly, approachable, and clear, in compliance with the policies and mission of Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter.
Duties and responsibilities include:
Maintain a high-level of communication with the shelter's veterinary and management team. Assist with the intake of all animals including basic wellness, administering vaccinations, parasite treatments, and routine screenings. Conduct appointments for fosters that include basic wellness, administering vaccinations, parasite treatments, routine screenings, and surgical appointments. Collect laboratory samples including blood, urine, feces. Age, sex, and identify accurate breeds upon intake. Review animal records and files daily to ensure all treatment records are up-to-date and accurate. Assist with adoptions when medical information is needed. Medicate orally, SQ, IM and fill prescriptions as directed by the shelter's veterinarian. Respond to emergency situations and administer triage care as needed. Communicate with shelter staff to ensure all medical conditions are being monitored. Assist in cleaning of medical areas, equipment, isolation kennels, and cages as needed. Prepare animals for surgery. Other job duties as assigned by the Shelter Veterinarian, Management, or Executive Director.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
Associate degree in animal science, veterinary technology, or related area (preferred) with 2+ years' experience (shelter experience preferred) Certified or licensed Veterinarian Technician preferred. Shelter experience 2+ years. Ability to balance multiple priorities, while providing consistent and professional service. A high degree of self-motivation. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. Valid driver's license required.

Work Environment:
Ability to be comfortable working with cats and dogs. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including lifting 50 lbs. unassisted and regularly, 50+ lbs. assisted, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, standing, and bending. Due to the nature of shelter work, this person must be comfortable working with cats and dogs experiencing high stress levels and treating animals with zoonotic or other diseases. The successful candidate must be able to work with and support a large, dedicated group of volunteers who foster many of our animals prior to adoption.
