POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Veterinary Technician will provide medical support to the Veterinarian at Gem City Vet, a low-cost clinic operated by Gem City Kitties. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we offer affordable veterinary care for pets in low-income families. The Veterinary Technician will assist the doctor with examinations, diagnoses, and treatments. Gem City Vet offers wellness care only, so this position will not require surgery. We are looking for someone who is passionate about animal welfare, highly organized, and able to interact compassionately with all clients.
SCHEDULE & PAY
$44,000 annual salary. Monday
- Thursday work week. Monday
Wednesday:
8am- 6pm, with a 30 minute lunch break.
Thursday:
8:30am
One Thursday afternoon per month required. Ability to cover Sunday shifts during PTO for Sunday staff members is a bonus but not required. At this time, we are not able to cover health insurance, unfortunately. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, employment qualifies under current federal student loan forgiveness programs. (Please confirm all details with your specific situation and current program guidelines). . Staff members receive low-cost veterinary care for their own pets on all items offered at Gem City Vet. Full-time work begins August 3, 2026 although training may begin earlier as schedules allow.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide compassionate care to patients, following Fear Free practices as closely as time allows. Perform all duties in accordance with medical policies and procedures Prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas Perform physical examinations; record observations on patients Assist the doctor in medical procedures or treatments Give injections and administer oral medications in accordance with policy Assist in restraining patients and keeping a safe environment for both patients and staff Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draw blood for laboratory analysis; and ensure that test results are recorded in patient records Counsel clients on various aspects of animal care; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home Understand usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients Communicate with the Program Director to ensure an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies is maintained, as determined by the inventory control system Implement and follow procedures set by the Board of Directors Handle inventory management for controlled drug regulated by the DEA and Board of Pharmacy including: unpack and enter drug information into inventory management system, maintain drug logs, and ensure all protocols are met per applicable regulations
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Graduate of a collegiate veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities or equivalent program in veterinary technology.
Experience:
2 years of related experience working with animals in a clinical setting.
Certification/Licensure:
LVT license or CVT/RVT certification required. Must have deep concern and empathy for animals Must be able to pass a background check Require interactions with animals owned by the public and has risks of bites or scratches Bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, lifting 40 lb items Exposure to cleaning agents, allergens, and zoonotic disease Ability to learn new computer programs quickly
