Job Description
Certified Veterinary Technician Companion Animal Hospital Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists in patient care and medical treatments as directed by technical staff or doctor. Provides appropriate customer service in all client interactions and demonstrates ability to work professionally with clients in varying emotional states. Provides gentle and compassionate care of patients throughout their stay. Admits patients for medical and surgical cases; obtains updated medical history and completes patient vitals. Demonstrates technical proficiency to perform blood draws, to include jugular, phallic and saphenous. Prepares samples for shipment to laboratory and completes necessary documentation. Maintains and uses in-house laboratory equipment to perform in-house lab testing. Performs necessary lab work such as blood draws, blood profiles, urinalysis, fecal tests, skin scrapings, and parasites. Performs cystocentesis procedures. Monitors surgery schedule, updates surgical board, and prepares surgical space with required instruments, medication, and equipment throughout the day. Prepares patient for surgery by cleaning/prepping surgical site, performing ear and nail checks, expressing bladder. Assists Veterinarian in surgery by performing accurate drug calculations, administering anesthesia through IV and IM injections, drawing blood, intubation and extubation of patients, placement of catheter, administering IV fluids, and completing accurate records as required. Monitors patient vitals (i.e., heart/respiration rate, MM color. CRT, blood pressure and temperature) during surgery and into recovery. Properly clean, pack and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Correctly labels and verifies expiration labels on surgical packs. Completes post-surgical nursing care of patient to include, administering medications, monitoring vitals, collecting urine/fecal/blood samples, overseeing feeding, and preparing surgery discharges. Assists doctor and performs dental treatments using hand tools, instruments and equipment to include cleanings, scalings, polishing and full-mouth x-rays; Identifies and communicates any concerns to the doctor. Fills prescriptions as directed by the doctor and completes controlled substance log; Monitors drug supply and expiration date; Demonstrates careful medication handling, knowledge of stock rotation and use. Provides and reviews accurate quotes and fee schedule for services to clients. Communicates with clients and provides oral or written post-operative home care treatment and medication administration instructions; Call back/follow-up with clients concerning certain patients. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of all services rendered, hospital charges, medications, supplies, and products dispensed during patient visit, lab results and other related information in patient records in a timely manner. Performs accurately positioned and measured radiographs as treatment indicates following all safety regulations; prepares radiographs for electronic documentation and transmission. Maintains and performs proper upkeep of surgical, radiographic, anesthesia, and laboratory equipment at all times to include general cleaning; preventative maintenance, restocking and refilling between procedures. Follows all company and AAHA policies and procedures paying special attention to patient care and safety. Attends and participates in all staff meetings, completes 20 hours of continuing education each period, and attends all trainings required by the practice or state licensing requirements. Adheres to the established daily schedule and maintains a flexible full-time or part-time schedule to include evening hours. Perform other related duties as assigned.
