Job Title:
HVAC Technician Job Description This role focuses on independently servicing, diagnosing, and repairing commercial and industrial rooftop HVAC systems, typically 10 tons or larger. You will manage your own service truck, receive work orders via an iPad or laptop, and interact directly with customers to explain work performed and recommend solutions for minor repairs. The position runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and involves close collaboration with internal project and sales teams for major system decisions. Responsibilities Independently perform service calls on commercial and industrial HVAC systems, with a focus on rooftop units 10 tons or larger. Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and refrigeration issues, including compressors and chillers. Complete repairs on HVAC and refrigeration equipment, ensuring high-quality workmanship and reliable system performance. Conduct preventative and preventive maintenance on commercial HVAC systems using appropriate hand tools and service equipment. Use an assigned work truck, iPad, and/or laptop to receive, manage, and complete work orders efficiently. Document work performed clearly and accurately, including diagnosis, repairs, and recommended follow-up actions. Communicate directly with customers on-site, explaining the work being done and presenting practical solutions for minor repairs. Identify situations that require major decisions, such as full unit replacements or building automation upgrades, and involve the project manager or sales manager as needed. Provide professional, customer-facing service at industrial and commercial locations, including manufacturing facilities. Adhere to safety procedures and best practices while working on rooftops and within industrial and commercial environments. Essential Skills 3+ years of HVAC refrigeration experience or completion of at least 3 years of an apprenticeship, or equivalent field experience. Strong hands-on experience with commercial HVAC systems, specifically rooftop units 10 tons or larger. Demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot compressors, chillers, and related mechanical and refrigeration components. Proficiency in performing field service work, including service calls, repairs, and preventative maintenance. Experience working in commercial and industrial environments; commercial experience only, no residential. Customer-facing service experience with the ability to interact directly and professionally with clients. Solid mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools and service tools used in HVAC work. Ability to work independently in the field, manage time effectively, and complete assigned work orders. Good communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical issues and repair options to customers. Professionalism in appearance and speaking skills when representing the company at customer sites. Additional Skills & Qualifications Massachusetts Refrigeration License, which is required for higher pay levels and considered a strong asset. Formal HVAC apprenticeship training or certification, with 3+ years of apprenticeship or equivalent experience. Experience performing preventative and preventive maintenance programs on commercial HVAC systems. Comfort working with digital tools such as iPads or laptops for receiving and documenting work orders. Ability to collaborate with project managers and sales managers on major system decisions, such as full unit replacements or building automation projects. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a full-time role with a regular schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work takes place primarily at industrial and commercial customer sites, including many manufacturing facilities, with all serviced units located on rooftops and typically 10 tons or larger. You will operate a dedicated work truck and use an iPad or laptop to receive and manage work orders. The environment is field-based and hands-on, involving mechanical and refrigeration work, use of hand tools, and regular travel between customer locations. Professional appearance and demeanor are expected when interacting with customers in these commercial and industrial settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Palmer, MA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
