Teacher Scale Position Summary The Instructional Coach serves as a supportive, non-evaluative instructional leader who partners with teachers to strengthen classroom instruction, improve student outcomes, and build overall instructional capacity across the division. The Instructional Coach focuses on collaboration, coaching cycles, data-informed decision-making, and the promotion of high-quality Tier 1 explicit instruction across all content areas. The Instructional Coach is a trusted partner, advocate, and problem-solver who fosters a positive culture of continuous growth and professional excellence. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function. Essential Functions Provides non-evaluative coaching and instructional support to teachers across all content areas and grade levels. Models research-based instructional strategies and evidence-based best practices in a variety of classroom settings. Observes classrooms and delivers timely, constructive, and actionable feedback tailored to individual teacher needs. Assists teachers in designing lessons aligned to best practices, division curriculum, and state standards. Supports teachers in strengthening Tier 1 explicit instruction and establishing classroom structures that maximize student learning. Collaborates with individual teachers through co-planning, co-teaching, and structured coaching cycles. Uses student performance data to guide instructional conversations and support data-driven decision-making. Supports teachers in identifying instructional strengths, gaps, and next steps; assists teachers in setting measurable goals and monitoring progress. Builds teacher capacity through coaching cycles, modeling, collaboration, and sharing innovative problem-solving strategies. Plans and facilitates professional development sessions aligned with division priorities and instructional goals, including modeling effective and engaging instructional strategies. Supports the implementation of division initiatives and ensures instructional alignment with district goals and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requirements. Works collaboratively with classroom teachers to implement instructional strategies that meet the needs of students with disabilities, English Learners, and other students with diverse learning needs. Analyzes student assessment data to support instructional decision-making; may serve on the school's leadership team to support the advancement of student achievement. Assists in the development of aligned curriculum and assessments. Maintains organized documentation of coaching activities, goals, and progress; provides regular reports to school and division leadership. Participates in school and division meetings, trainings, and professional learning opportunities. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by keeping current with research, best practices, and VDOE requirements. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Deep knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices across content areas and grade levels. Strong understanding of Tier 1 explicit instruction and tiered intervention frameworks. Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret student performance data to inform instructional decisions. Expertise in developing and facilitating professional development activities for teachers and staff at the school and division level. Demonstrated ability to model effective teaching strategies and provide constructive, actionable feedback. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, maintain confidentiality, and cultivate positive working relationships with diverse staff. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to serve as a thought partner for teachers and administrators. Demonstrated understanding of differentiated instruction and strategies for supporting diverse learners, including students with disabilities and English Learners. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, and division leaders. Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision. Approachable, flexible, and reflective professional who models a growth mindset and commitment to continuous improvement. Qualifications, Education, and Experience A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required; a master's degree is preferred. A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching License is required. A minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience is required. Demonstrated experience in an instructional leadership role (e.g., department chair, mentor teacher, team leader, instructional coach) is preferred. Experience providing instructional coaching, professional development, or mentoring to educators is preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical Requirements This work occasionally requires exerting up to 40 pounds of force. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle, or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive motions, and occasionally requires pushing or pulling. Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities. Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds). Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and bloodborne pathogens, and may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location. Special Requirements Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. Requires the ability to acquire a valid driver's license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
