Essential Job Functions:
The Judiciary Clerk in the Domestic Violence Unit/Civil Division performs data entry and processes protective and peace order cases for Baltimore County District Court. Prepares protective and peace order dockets for the courtroom. Greets and assists the public at the Clerk?s Office customer service counter with petitions for protective and peace orders.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare case files for the peace and protective order dockets. Enter service returns from law enforcement. Verify expiration dates and service outcomes prior to the docket for each case scheduled. Review peace and protective order petitions for accuracy and completeness. Perform data entry of peace and protective orders prior to hearings. Greet and assist customers at the customer service counter who are filing peace or protective orders, provide information related to court policy and procedure, provide copies of orders after court. Communicate with law enforcement and the Department of Social Services to ensure the return of service affidavits and court ordered DSS investigations prior to hearingsMinimum Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma (or GED equivalent).Experience:
One (1) year of work experience, preferably in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.Note:
A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experienceKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
General office practices, procedures, and equipment. Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary. Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.Skill in:
Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently. Typing on a personal computer. Accuracy and attention to detail.Ability to:
Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc. Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems. Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing. Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys. Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation.Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work . Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.Equipment, Machinery and Tools:
Personal computer, scanner, xerox machine, calculator, telephone switchboard. These tools are used to process the daily filings submitted to the court and to communicate with the general public, attorneys and other government agency representatives.Software and Computer Skills:
MDEC, Adobe, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), DV Office. MDEC is used daily for data entry and to review case records in order to provide information to the public. DV Office is used to process peace and protective order petitions and to review case records to provide information to the public. Outlook is used to communicate with other court personnel. Word is used to prepare correspondence and court forms. Adobe is used to view, create and modify PDF documents.Selection Process:
