The Hartford is seeking a Junior Developer / Junior Data Engineer to join our AI Enablement organization . This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is excited to learn, build, and contribute to real, production-grade AI and data platforms alongside experienced Data Scientists, Engineers, and Technical Leaders. This position is not expected to own end-to-end platforms or initiatives . Instead, you will work on well-defined components within larger AI systems, gaining hands-on experience while being supported by senior engineers and data scientists. Role Scope & Expectations (Important) This role is part of a ~20-person AI Enablement team with shared ownership across platforms. You will focus on specific tasks, components, or features , not full systems. Success is measured by learning, code quality, reliability, and collaboration , not independent ownership. You will receive mentorship, design guidance, and code reviews from senior team members. Key Responsibilities Data & Platform Development Contribute to the development of data pipelines, APIs, and services supporting AI and analytics platforms. Assist in building and maintaining cloud-based data workflows for structured and unstructured data. Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following established standards. AI & Analytics Enablement (Scoped Contributions) Support AI platforms such as: Synthetic data generation components (Deep Synthetic Foundry) Text and document processing pipelines (OCR, NLP, IDP) Image or multimodal data workflows Implement clearly defined features or enhancements under guidance from senior engineers. Data Engineering Foundations Work with SQL and cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) to ingest, transform, and validate data. Help ensure data quality, reliability, and performance in production pipelines. Learn best practices for monitoring, logging, and operational support. Collaboration & Learning Partner with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Product team members on shared goals. Participate in design discussions, sprint planning, and code reviews. Continuously learn modern tools, frameworks, and AI-related technologies. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 0-2 years of experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic projects). Familiarity with Python and basic software development concepts. Basic knowledge of SQL and data structures. Interest in data engineering, analytics, or AI systems. Strong communication skills and willingness to learn. Preferred Exposure to cloud platforms or modern data stacks. Experience with APIs, ETL pipelines, or data processing frameworks. Coursework or projects related to data engineering, machine learning, or analytics . Curiosity about AI, NLP, computer vision, or synthetic data (experience not required). Training Plan endorsement for this position. Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
