Job Description
Lake Patrol Officer City of Fort Scott - Police Department Position Summary The Lake Patrol Officer helps keep Fort Scott lakes safe by enforcing laws, protecting people and property, and responding to emergencies on the water. This position patrols lakes, assists boaters, investigates accidents and crimes, provides first aid, and maintains positive public relations. Key Duties Patrol city lakes and enforce boating laws, including the Kansas Safe Boating Act. Stop unsafe or suspicious activity and issue warnings or citations when needed. Respond to boating accidents, emergencies, and crime calls. Provide emergency first aid and assist stranded boaters. Investigate crimes and accidents, gather evidence, and prepare reports. Secure crime scenes and follow proper evidence procedures. Testify in court when required. Work cooperatively with firefighters, FSPD, BBCO Sheriff, EMS, and other agencies. Educate the public on boating and water safety. Maintain police boats, vehicles, equipment, and records. Follow department policies and stay current on Kansas boating laws. Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED Valid driver's license First aid and emergency medical certifications Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of law enforcement and criminal investigation procedures Knowledge of local geography Good communication and public relations skills Ability to stay calm and make quick decisions in emergencies Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to maintain accurate reports and records Ability to safely operate boats, vehicles, and law enforcement equipment Physical Requirements This position requires: Standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, lifting, and reaching Working outdoors in all weather conditions Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally Exposure to hazardous situations, including water rescues, traffic, chemicals, and emergency scenes Working Conditions Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposure to heat, cold, rain, fumes, dust, and hazardous environments is common. Must be able to work under stressful and emergency conditions. Performance Expectations Respond quickly and professionally to calls and emergencies Enforce boating laws fairly and consistently Maintain accurate reports and evidence records Demonstrate professionalism with the public and coworkers Keep supervisors informed of significant activities and concerns
