Job Description

JOB The Department of Public Health (DPH), Animal Care Division, is seeking compassionate and dedicated Animal Care Attendants
  • to join our Animal Care Team in providing essential care for animals in need.
This role involves routine manual labor in both shelter and field environments. Attendants may be assigned to a variety of tasks, such as providing enrichment to animals, assisting with transportation and supporting the veterinary team. This is a hands-on role ideal for individuals who are passionate about animal welfare and comfortable working in a physically active environment. Applicants must be available to work weekends. Shift schedule may be 4-10 hour shifts as follows: 8:00am
  • 6:30pm Sunday
  • Wednesday OR 8:00am
  • 6:30pm Wednesday
  • Saturday.
Key responsibilities include but not limited to: Cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cat cages, livestock corrals, equipment, and work areasFeeding and watering animalsAdministering medications as needed and monitoring animal behavior and healthAssisting Animal Control Officers with animal impoundsSupervising multi-animal playgroups and providing treatsWalking, playing with, and bathing dogs and catsTransporting animals to veterinary clinics for spay/neuter proceduresMaintaining forms, logs, and shelter database recordsAnswering basic questions from the public and assisting with animal adoptions proceduresPerforming general maintenance and upkeep around the shelterAssisting with orienting new volunteers on procedures and policiesAssisting the medical team in public service eventsSupporting media team with animal handling and may appear in official County social media contentProviding reception and administrative coverage as neededField-related duties may include: Delivering and retrieving animal traps and related paperworkPicking up deceased animalsTransporting livestock as neededAdministering vaccinations to stray animals•

OF EMPLOYMENT
Animal Euthanasia:
Please be aware, shelters currently participate in humane euthanasia of sick, injured, or unadopted impounded animals. Incumbents will be required to be certified on humane euthanasia upon hire.
Physical:
Requires frequent standing and walking; frequent stooping and bending; and the ability to lift and restrain small to very large animals, both domestic and wild, which may weigh up to 100 pounds. Additionally, these positions require work in inclement weather.
Travel & Driver License:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Work Schedule:
Must be available to work weekends. Shift schedule may be 4-10 hour shifts as follows: 8:00am

Pre-Employment Process:
Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require Visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Education Requirement:
High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
ANDExperience Requirement:
Six (6) months of full-time experience in general public contact or customer service;
  • OR-Three (3) months of full-time equivalent experience in animal care and handling within an animal control or regulatory agency, veterinary clinic, animal care facility, or animal hospital.
Volunteer experience is considered qualifying.
